In the computer network where Windows 2000 Server is the Server operating system, the system administrator has a very important task, that is, setting disk quotas for clients that access Server resources, that is, limit the volume space they can access server resources at one time. This is designed to prevent a client from occupying excessive server and network resources, so that other clients cannot access the server and use the network. This article describes how to configure the server disk quota.

How does the system administrator configure disk quotas?

Disk Quota is not very important for common Windows 2000 users, but it is very important for the system administrator of the entire network. Once there are many clients in the network, and frequently Access Server resources and use the network, it is difficult to meet the needs of all users regardless of how powerful the server computing capability or the amount of traffic the network can afford. Therefore, the system administrator must set the disk quota for clients on the network. In Windows 2000, the disk quota controls the disk space usage according to volume tracking. The system administrator can perform the following Configuration:

O when the user exceeds the specified disk space limit, prevent further use of disk space and logon events.

O when the user exceeds the specified disk space alert level, log on to an event.

O when the disk quota is enabled, you can set two values: disk quota limit and disk quota warning level. The quota limits the amount of disk space that users can use. The alert level specifies the point where the user is close to the quota limit. For example, set the user's disk quota to 60 MB and the disk quota to 40 MB. In this case, you can store files of up to 60 MB in the volume. If you store files larger than 40 MB in the volume, a system event is logged on to the system based on the disk quota.

In addition, the system administrator can specify that users can exceed the quota. This is because, when you do not want to deny the user access to the volume, but want to track the disk space usage of each user, it is useful to enable the quota and do not limit the disk space usage. When the user exceeds the quota and disk quota warning level, you can also specify whether to log on to the event.

When the disk quota of the volume is started, new users will automatically track the volume usage from that point. However, existing volume users cannot apply for disk quotas. You can apply for a disk quota for an existing volume user by adding a new quota in the "quota items" window. You can enable the quota in the local volume and remote volume, but you can only share the volume in the root directory of the volume and format it as NTFS.

To support disk quotas, the disk volume format must be NTFS version 5.0. NTFS version 4.0 is automatically updated to NTFS version 5.0 format by Windows2000 Setup. To manage the volume quota, you must be a member of the Administrator Group on the computer where the drive is located.

Note: If the volume is not in NTFS format or the user is not a member of the Administrator Group on the local computer, the Quota tab is not displayed on the properties page of the volume. In addition, File compression does not affect the number of the volume. For example, if Larry is limited to 5 MB of disk space, the user can only store 5 MB of files, even if the files are compressed.
