Application to: Windows 7
The COM port on the VM provides continuous connections. The most common use of such ports is to transmit data for debugging or capturing the output of a virtual machine. You can select one of the following options to connect to the COM Port:
Physical serial port. Select this option to use the COM port on the physical computer to implement input and output on the virtual machine. If a program running on a virtual machine attempts to access the COM port and wants to capture the serial port on the physical computer, select "Wait For the modem command to open the port ". This option causes the Windows Virtual PC to wait for the AT modem command to be sent to the port (the AT command directly uses the modem for communication tasks ). If the program times out when the COM port is captured, the port is released to the host operating system.
Clear this option if you want the virtual machine to try to capture the serial port on the physical machine after it is started. If the serial port has been captured, the virtual machine cannot capture it. If the virtual machine captures the serial port, the serial port will not be released to the host operating system before the virtual machine is closed.
Name the MPs queue. This option connects the virtual serial port to a Windows named pipe or computer on the network on the host operating system. A named pipe is a part of the memory. A process can use a named pipe to transmit information to another process so that one piece of information is output and another information is input. The second process can be a local process (on the same computer as the first process) or a remote process (on a network computer ). For example, the locally named pipeline path can be \. \ pipe \ mypipename.
A named pipe can be used to create a virtual air-conditioning modem cable between two virtual machines or between a virtual machine and a debug program on the host operating system that supports the named pipe. By connecting two virtual serial ports to the same named pipe, you can create a virtual air-conditioning modem cable connection. The named pipe is useful for debugging or for any program that requires an air-conditioning Modem connection.
Text file. Select this option to send the COM port output from the VM to a text file. You can specify the location of text files on any valid disk drive on the physical computer.
To configure the COM port of a VM
Enable virtual machine settings. Perform any of the following operations:
In the "virtual machine" folder, right-click the name of the Virtual Machine and click "set ".
In the virtual machine window, click the Tools menu, and then click Settings ".
On the left pane of the Windows Virtual PC settings page, click the name of the available COM port. For example, COM 1.
In the right pane, select the connection type and provide other details. For example, specify the full path and name of the named pipe or text file.
Click OK to save the changes.
