Connect to a Windows shared printer from a MAC address (2)

Based on the different operating systems and existing test results, we will discuss in detail the differences between different connection methods and system combinations based on the combinations of different systems:

From 10.6 lions to Windows XP/Vista/7:

You can use a Windows Printer directly to share and/or any of the LPD methods, either through the local LPT/USB port, standard TCP/IP, or even virtual print port.

Problem: when using a Windows Printer to share the connection mode, in the print queue of a Windows machine, the printed document name displays "remote downlevel document". The number of printed pages is incorrect, only N/A is displayed. The document owner is the Windows user name used for printing on the Mac end. The task size and submission time are displayed correctly. The submission time is based on the Windows Local system time, instead of the MAC system time.

From 10.7 lions to Windows XP:

You cannot create a printer connection by using a shared connection with a Windows Printer.

The lpd sharing method is acceptable, but there are some restrictions on the right: if it is a virtual port, such as Adobe PDF and Microsoft XPS document writer, printing can be successful regardless of the network; if it is a local physical port or a TCP/IP Port, when a Windows computer uses a wireless network, the printer cannot be connected to the Mac, or the printer may be printed incorrectly; if it is an Ethernet ethernet wired network, there is no such problem.

From 10.7 lions to Windows 7/Vista:

You cannot create a printer connection by using a shared connection with a Windows Printer.

The lpd sharing method is acceptable, and there is no restriction on the network connection method similar to XP.

Print Configuration

I have introduced the connection method in section 4. for users who do not know much about the meanings of the terms, it may be difficult to understand the meaning of the terms. The following is a detailed description.

Share directly with a Windows Printer

Windows: in different versions of Windows, although the steps are different, they are similar. To the printer list, in the printer properties (Printer
Properties)-> share tag (Sharing), open share and give a suitable share name, such as XPS. Each shared printer is the same as a shared folder, and there is a small hand under its icon. In this way, you can use the "\ computer name \ shared printer name" method to access other Windows machines, and use your own access method on the Mac system. Is a shared printer on Windows 7:

Mac OS X: To connect to a Windows shared printer, to system preferences-> Print & scan ), click the Add button (+) under the printer list ). If the lion 10.7 system may list nearby printers, just select "add another printer or scanner (add
Other printer or other )". In the Add Printer window that appears, click the Windows button in the toolbar.

See. The leftmost column is the list of domains in the current network. Generally, Windows machines that are not added to any domain use workgroup by default. Click the domain used by your computer, all computers in the domain are listed in the middle column. After the selection, the system will ask you to enter an access user account, that is, a user account on a Windows computer. For details, see, list all the shared printers on the right.

After clicking the printer, you can give it a name and location of the printer in the Mac. It is important to select a correct printer driver. If not, use one of the generic postscript printer or generic PCL printer. After adding, follow the Wizard to complete the connection step.

Use LPD protocol

Windows XP: first install the Unix Printing Service. From the Control Panel> add or remove Applications> Add/Remove Windows Components> find other network file and print services, select print services
For UNIX, click OK. See.

Follow the Wizard to complete this operation. Note that Windows XP may require you to insert an installation disk for Windows XP.
After the printer is successfully shared, share the printer as described in "share printer directly for Windows" above. Record the network IP address of the Windows computer, and then you can
OS X is configured.

Windows Vista/7: Unlike XP, You need to enable the LPD print service function. In "programs and features" on the control panel, select "turn windows features on or off" on the right ". Find "print and document services", open "LPD Print Server", confirm and follow the Wizard to complete the installation steps. See:

After the printer is successfully shared, share the printer as described in "share printer directly for Windows" above. Record the network IP address of the Windows computer, and then you can
OS X is configured.

Mac OS X: When you add an LPD printer, the previous steps to open the Add Printer window are the same as described in the previous section. Then select the IP button in the toolbar, select "line printer daemon-lpd" in Protocol protocol, and enter the IP address of the Windows computer recorded earlier in Address, in the queue, enter the name of the shared printer given when the printer is shared. Then, give it a name, fill in the location, and select the correct printer driver.

Network Printer (IPP)

If the printer supports the network, connect it directly to the network and check whether the IPP function is enabled. On a Mac computer, refer to OS X settings in the "use LPD protocol" section, but select the Protocol as Internet Printing Protocol.
-IPP. Others are similar.

Troubleshooting:

Is the user name/password incorrect for Windows Printer sharing?

Specify the user's domain/computer according to different situations.
If you are an ad user, such as the domain name corpad and user name Tony, enter the user name corpad \ Tony or Tony @ corpad.
For a user group, specify the machine name.
For example, if the computer name is work_i7, then work_i7 \ Tony.

In Windows Printer sharing, cannot Windows computer be found in Mac OS X?

Check the network configuration of the MAC system and set it to the same domain/group name as the Windows computer in wins.

Why can't Mac OS X be printed in Windows Printer sharing?

During each printing, the MAC system will ask the user information for access to the Windows computer. If you use keychain for management, the system will automatically use the key chain for storage each time the printing is performed, however, if the user on Windows changes the password, authentication on Mac will fail, and Mac will ask the user to enter the authentication account again and enter the correct one for printing.

In the LPD protocol, the printer that was originally working cannot connect to a Windows computer?

If you use dynamic IP Address Allocation on Windows, check if the IP address has changed. Delete the original file and add a new one.

In the LPD protocol, the printer that was originally working cannot connect to a Windows computer. 2?

Windows 7 computer problems, because the LPD Print Service is based on the Print Spooler service, if the print spooler is stopped, even if it is manually enabled, you still need to manually restart the lpd service once. For Windows firewalls, port 515 must also be allowed.

Use Net start to list all windows services that have already started. Use Net start or net stop to stop or start a service. See

What is a typical print error on Mac?

Unable to connect to the server unable to conenct to server, see:

Postscript:

Using IPP's universal print language to share a printer is the best way. It is not only intuitive and easy to understand, but also easy for users to operate, but users may need to make additional investment in the printer hardware, this is a limitation of this method.

From the above analysis, we can see that the printing compatibility of the snow leopard 10.6 system is much better than that of the lion 10.7 system. The final user's feeling is that the MAC system has regressed in terms of compatibility. This may be a technical problem. For example, the delay time set in the System Configuration is too short and the error is caused by timeout. However, it may also be a marketing strategy of Apple, which we do not know yet. However, from another perspective, as the MAC system is upgraded, it has gone through the process from multiple means to unification. Although it has lost the possibility of choice, it brings consistency. However, this process is not noticed by common users during Mac changes. Print a shared connection is an instance.

In fact, similar changes may exist in each MAC upgrade. for end users with special requirements, especially those who need to operate with other systems, before upgrading your Mac, it is best to test whether the required functions are supported in the new upgrade system. In most cases, the support will get better and better, but the reality is not always so disappointing.
