Windows 2000 is a highly integrated network environment. It can log on to Netware, Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows advance server, and other networks without any client software. If you use multiple networks at the same time, you can log on to all connected networks as long as the user name and password are the same in different networks.
The following describes how to configure the TCP/IP protocol so that Windows 2000 can log on to Windows NT Server 4.0.
Install setup Protocol
TCP/IP communication protocols were used only in large networks in the past. Microsoft now provides powerful TCP/IP protocol components in Windows NT and the latest Windows 2000, therefore, you can use TCP/IP to establish a Windows 2000 -- Windows NT Server 4.0 network.
Note: Windows 2000 uses the netbeui communication protocol to communicate with Windows NT Server 4.0 without special settings, the installation of netbeui communication protocol is similar to that of TCP/IP protocol.
1. Double-click the "Network and dial-up connections" icon in the "control panel" window to open the "Network and dial-up connections" window.
2. Right-click "Local Connection" and choose "properties ".
3. In the pop-up "Local Connection Properties" dialog box, select the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" option, and then click the [properties] button. The "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" dialog box is displayed.
4. In the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" dialog box, the "ip address" tab contains the "automatically retrieve IP Address" and "specify IP Address" radio buttons. When the DHCP service is enabled on the Windows NT Server, select the "automatically obtain IP Address" radio button. If the Windows NT Server cannot be automatically assigned an IP address, select the "specify IP Address" radio button, and enter the corresponding IP address and subnet mask address in the "ip address" and "subnet mask" text boxes.
5. Here we use 192.168.1.108 as the internal IP address of the Local Machine. Fill in 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask, and fill in the IP address of the Windows NT Server as the gateway, such as 192.168.1.130.
6. If Windows NT server in the LAN is a Domain Name Server (DNS server), we can also enter 192.168.1.130 as the IP address of the primary DNS server.
7. Click [OK.
Note: If you want to set other settings in the "TCP/IP properties" dialog box, click the [advanced] button, you can also set properties such as the WINS service (Windows Internet Name Server, Windows International Name Server) and DNS (Domain Name Server) of TCP/IP communication protocol. The values of these attributes must be set based on the actual situation. If you cannot correctly set these options, Windows 2000 can still be connected to Windows NT 4.0 Server using the TCP/IP protocol, you can also share files, printers, and other resources on the server.
