Cost and performance of Oracle new-generation virtual computing All-in-One Machine

To promote hardware sales, a new generation of integrated systems, including Oracle virtual computing All-in-One OVCA, and other integrated devices, were launched after Oracle's core dual-slot server market.

At this point, Oracle first focuses on high-end and more professional integrated systems, such as Exadata and Exalytics, tim Shetler, vice president of Oracle Exadata product management, described them as "a system built for a task" in an interview ". In order to enter the mainstream dual-slot server business, Oracle will launch a less-known but more general integrated system.

At the press conference, Oracle CTO Larry Ellison said: "In the past, we never really competed against this core data center business ." Competition requires a new strategy. The core of the strategy is the family member of the next generation Integrated System X5-virtual computing all-in-one machine OVCA.

Performance Analysis of next generation OVCA

Shetler said that the Oracle virtual computing machine can meet all your needs in the data processing process. With Oracle's latest Intel Xeon processor-based dual-slot server, the virtual computing All-in-One X5 can be expanded from two nodes to 25 nodes in a single rack. It has a total memory capacity of 19.2 TB and supports Windows, Solaris, and Linux applications. A new feature of the new generation of products is that users can choose to use full-flash storage or use both hard drives and flash devices to balance customers' different needs for superior performance and storage capabilities.

Devices of version X5 can also run an internal network completely on InfiniBand, Ellison says, InfiniBand is faster and more reliable than Ethernet and fiber. The built-in network in the device is completely Software Defined. Ellison said: "After a successful configuration, if you want to add more nodes, you only need to change the file parameters to reconfigure and expand, one connection is enough ."

Virtual computing device X5 is used together with the Oracle FS1-2 flash system, the storage domain network device announced this upgrade. Based on the highly available horizontal scaling architecture, the FS1-2 supports 16 highly available nodes, 912TB flash capacity, 2.9PB flash and hard drive combinations, and 10:1 data compression. With the most complete flash configuration of the virtual computing machine X5, The FS1-2 can handle up to 2 million of I/OPS, of which 50% reads, 50% writes.

Oracle can also achieve low costs

In terms of cost, Ellison compared the virtual computing All-in-One X5 with its rival Cisco's Unified Computing System, UCS, which is equipped with a CiscoM4 blade server. From the presentation, we can see that Oracle has a lower cost in both hardware and software. According to Ellison, the prices for the apsaradb for memcache system with 27 servers and 972 processor cores and virtual computing devices with similar configurations are USD 0.45 million and USD 0.22 million respectively, this is the most costly option for Oracle.

He also made the same comparison between FS1-2 and EMC's VNX8000 storage systems, with the price difference between 15.6TB flash and 192TB hard drive configuration being $0.63 million. Ellison said that in the dual-slot server industry, winning is at a lower cost. Oracle's new goal is to reduce costs.

For a long time, Oracle has been emphasizing high availability rather than low costs. Why did it suddenly save costs for customers? Ellison said he was reluctant to discuss whether oracle was a low-cost vendor. Shetler said that the price of the Oracle virtual computing all-in-one machine has dropped, but it has always been cheaper than its competitors than other general integration systems of oracle.

Shetler said: "People's understanding is biased. people only see the higher price of Oracle. But in fact, the company still provides a series of cost-effective systems, not all for high-end users."

Ray Wang, founder and chief analyst of the Constellation research company, believes that Ellison's strategy is not brand new. The virtual computing All-in-One X5 is a device Larry has long wanted to launch.
