Create a REMOTEFX-enabled virtual machine in Hyper-V in Windows Server R2

Today a netizen asks in Hyper-V creation, supports 3D content. There was a time without Hyper-V, and today at home on the PC, install the test.

1. Install Windows R2 on Windows 10 computers

My current computer is Windows 10, there are 1 128GB m.2 SSD (1 in the figure), 1 3TB hard disk as a data disk, a few days ago in order to install Windows 7, add a 2TB hard disk, then on this 2TB hard disk created 3 primary partitions, An extended partition where the 1th extended partition is installed with 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise Edition (this version does not automatically upgrade to Windows 10, the figure is 2), and the 2nd partition plan created is for Windows Server R2 (labeled 3 in the figure). The remaining two partitions are used as data disks, as shown in 1-1-1. For easy differentiation, you can add a volume label name to each volume.

The current version of Windows 10 is 14279, which is a preview version. My current experimental computer is an ASUS Z97-K motherboard, 8GB memory, Intel i5-4690k CPU, and no discrete graphics card is used in the CPU integrated graphics card (Intel HD 4600).

Now, most of the tests are in the virtual machine, but sometimes there is no way to do it in a virtual machine, for example, to test the Hyper-V, RemoteFX-capable VMS, and need to test on the physical machine. This is the time to install multiple systems. In fact, after Windows 7, it's easy to install multiple systems:

(1) Enter Windows 7 (or Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows R2, etc.) and start the installation in the Windows interface.

(2) There are multiple "free" partitions, one system per partition, and multiple systems cannot be installed on the same partition. For example, in Figure 1-1-1, Windows 10 is installed on a 128GB m.2 hard disk, and Windows 7 is installed in the primary partition labeled 2, and Windows 2012 will be installed in the partition labeled 3. If you also want to install more Windows systems, create more partitions on the line. If your hard disk does not have a separate partition, you can compress the existing partition, create a new partition in the compressed partition, or new VHDX or VHD files, and mount the virtual hard disk without any problems.

In the current computer, multiple systems for Windows 7, Windows 10 are already installed. So here's a quick introduction to installing Windows Server R2 content in Windows 10 (Windows 7, Windows 8 is similar).

(1) Enter the Windows 10 graphical interface, load the Windows Server R2 installation disc image, and copy all the files inside the installation disc image to a folder on your hard disk, as shown in 1-1-3. In my folder, there are installation files for Windows 7, Windows 10, and Windows 2012.

(2) After running Setup.exe, go to setup, 1-1-4 as shown.

(3) After the installation is relatively simple, enter the installation serial number, 1-1-5 is shown.

(4) In the installation location, select the partition labeled 2t_ws12r2-os in Figure 1-1-1, and 1-1-6 is shown.

(5) After waiting for installation to complete, after the first phase of installation is restarted, Windows Server r2,1-1-7 is added to the Boot menu item, which is the installed, multi-system boot selection menu, after which you can select the system to enter.

2 installing Hyper-V and creating a virtual machine

Install the Virtualization Host feature in Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Services after you enter Windows Server R2. After the installation is complete, after multiple reboots, go to Hyper-V manager.

(1) Select "Hyper-V settings", as shown in 2-1-1.

(2) on the physical GPU option, in the right drop-down list, select the video card that you want to use for the physical GPU, currently Intel HD 4600, and select "Use this GPU for RemoteFX", as shown in 2-1-2.

(3) Create a virtual machine, set the virtual machine name to Windows 10, save the virtual machine in a separate file flash, as shown in 2-1-3.

(4) in "Specify Algebra", select "First generation", 2-1-4, currently only the first-generation virtual machines support the RemoteFX feature.

(5) Other selection defaults, or, depending on the situation, allocate 2GB of memory for the virtual machine in this example (my current host is only 8GB, if your host configuration is high, you need to set larger memory depending on your needs), set the 127GB hard disk, 2-1-5 is shown.

(6) Set the virtual machine to complete, as shown in 2-1-6.

(7) Modify the settings for the virtual machine, as shown in 2-1-7.

(8) In the "Add Hardware" option, select "RemoteFX 3D video adapter", click the "Add" button, 2-1-8 is shown.

(9) After adding, click "OK" button, complete the setting, 2-1-9 is shown. Here you can also set the number of monitors and the resolution of the maximum monitor.

(11) After the installation is complete, in the Windows 10 virtual machine, the execution of DxDiag, in the "Display" tab, you can currently support 3D loading, the graphics card name is "Microsoft RemoteFX graphics Device-WDDM", 2-1-11 is shown.

(12) Return to Hyper-V manager, in "hyper-V settings → physical gpu", see in "GPU Details", there are 1 virtual machines currently using this gpu,2-1-12 shown.

If you turn off the Windows 10 virtual machine, remove the "RemoteFX 3D video adapter", start the virtual machine again and enter the system, perform dxdiag, and see the display name as shown in "Microsoft Hyper-V video", 2-1-13.

3 Windows 7 Virtual machine test

If you are creating a Windows 7 virtual machine in Hyper-V and you install the Windows 7 operating system, if you add a "RemoteFX 3D video adapter", you cannot use the console to enter Windows 7 virtual machines, as shown in 3-1-1, which is added " RemoteFX 3D video adapter "virtual machine, after installing Windows 7 prompt.

In this case, you need to turn off the virtual machine, modify the virtual machine configuration, and first remove the "RemoteFX 3D video adapter", as shown in 3-1-2.

After you start the virtual machine again, after you enter the Windows 7 operating system, set the IP address, start the Remote Desktop Connection feature, set a password for the current user (or set a password for administrator and enable the account), turn off the virtual machine, modify the virtual machine settings, and then add the " RemoteFX 3D video adapter, start the virtual machine again.

When the virtual machine is started again, use "Remote Desktop Connection", connect to this Windows 7 virtual machine, 3-1-3, execute dxdiage, can see the information.

4 Requirements for RemoteFX

Finally, let me briefly introduce the requirements of REMOTEFX.

Graphics card: The hardware requirements for RemoteFX in Windows Server 2012 are low, and typically support DirectX 11 graphics cards and install drivers.

CPU: The processor on your server must also support the second level Address translation (SLAT) extension, Data Execution Prevention (DEP), and enable virtualization in the server firmware.

The SLAT (Second level address translation) Two-tier addresses conversion technology is supported in both Intel and AMD processors, but the names are different, and Intel is called EPT (Extended Page Tables), Support is started in the Nehalem architecture, and AMD is called RVI (Rapid virtualization Indexing) and is only supported in the third generation of Opteron processor Barcelona.

If you want to see your computer, enable this feature, execute Msinfo32, and in the last four lines of "System summary" you can see that 4-1-1 shows.

Hyper-V VMS that support RemoteFX must have the minimum amount of RAM configured. For x86 VMS, you must configure at least a minimum of ram,x64 VMs to be at least 2048 MB of RAM.

The virtual machine operating system must be Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise or Ultimate, or Windows 8.1, Windows 10, requiring "first generation" virtual hardware.
