Create a System Installation tool for Windows and ESXi USB flash drive

For system integration engineers, it may be necessary to install systems such as Windows operating systems, VMware ESXi, etc. frequently.

For me, I often install Windows operating systems, VMware ESXi. Because of the different needs of users, the installed system and version are also different. I used to take several U-disk, now still with several U disk (this is the superiority of Chinese language, this U disk is not a U disk). But now with the USB flash drive with the previous one is different.

The previous USB flash drive, different USB flash drive, may be able to install a different operating system. For example, some USB sticks are used to install Windows 7, some USB sticks are used to install Windows Server 2008, some can only install VMware ESXi, and now with a USB flash drive, such as a 32GB USB flash drive, integrated from 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server R2, Windows Server 2016, and many different window Version s, VMware ESXi 5.0, 5.1, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, and different OEM versions of Dell, HP, and other ESXi. Now with more than one USB flash drive, more is to install multiple ESXi server to do multiple backups. The following is a description of the software, methods, and procedures that I used to make this tool.

(6) Open "Explorer" and find the installation location in Figure 1-2, double-click on Diannaodian.exe,1-7 as shown.

Computer Shop u disk Startup Disk production tools mainly have two functions: first, the U disk will be made into a startup disk, second, the production of ISO files, the production of computer store u disk ISO file. The first feature is described first.

(1) Insert the USB flash drive (the USB flash drive is a new USB flash drive or the data on the USB drive has been backed up to a secure location and confirmed that the backup has been completed), click the "Start making USB flash Drive" button, 1-8.

(2) The default mode is to make the startup USB flash drive, in the "Please select a USB flash drive" drop-down list, select a USB flash drive, do not select the error, this can be based on the list of USB stick name, capacity size selection; "Allocate hidden space" select default value; In the "Select Mode" drop-down list, You can choose to start the USB flash drive 4 modes: Hdd-fat32, Zip-fat32, hdd-fat16, zip-fat16, select the default value Hdd-fat32, click to select NTFS (1-9), this will pop up the information Tip dialog box in Figure 1-10, click "No" button.

(3) Click the "Start making" button to pop up the "informational prompt", warning this action will delete all data on the USB flash drive and not recoverable, as shown in 1-12. If the USB drive data has been backed up, click the OK button.

The second function of the computer shop U disk starter Maker is to generate an ISO image, which can be made into an ISO image with the current version of the PC store startup USB Drive tool, or an ISO file to make a bootable USB drive. Click "ISO mode", in "ISO generation, save path", select the ISO generated save path and file name, click the "Start Build" button, the production of the Computer Shop tool ISO file, 1-15 is shown.

The generated computer store's ISO file can be used for virtual machines, or it can be recorded as a CD-ROM (it is now largely unused or rarely used). Figure 1-16 is the ISO file that saves the different versions of the generated computer store.

Create the DND directory on the root of the USB stick, copy the ISO files from VMware ESXi to this directory, and copy the ISO files or other tools of VMware ESXi used or used to this directory, as shown in 1-18.

However, these file names are "too long" and may not be easily distinguishable when the USB flash drive displays these file names. So rename to a name similar to Figure 1-18.

A USB flash drive made by the PC's USB boot maker provides the "Install original Windows" feature, which applies to Windows 7 and later Windows operating systems. This feature is useful in some situations:

(1) When installing Lenovo, DELL, HP some brands of Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 o'clock, if you use USB flash drive to boot to Windows PE, using the Windows Installer installation tool, load windows ISO Image 7 can fail when you install the Windows operating system again. The ISO is burned to a CD-ROM, bootable by CD-ROM, and CD-ROM is installed successfully.

(2) When the server installs Windows Server R2 and its subsequent operating systems, the installation of the Windows Server operating system can be completed after booting, loading the RAID or SCSI driver with the disc.

Computer Store U disk startup Disc Production tool made of u disk, using the "Install the original Windows" feature, the effect is the same as using CD-ROM installation.

For example, if you are installing the Windows Server R2 operating system on a server, you can expand the CD-ROM image of Windows Server R2 to the root of the USB drive without burning the disc. and rename the Bootmgr file in the root directory after the copy to Win7mgr.

However, under normal circumstances, this approach can only expand the image of an operating system, or Windows 7, or Windows 10, or Windows Server R2, .... Take the installation USB drive for Windows 7 as an example.

(1) using the virtual CD-ROM to load the Windows 7 ISO, select all files after loading successfully, and right-click to select "Copy", 1-19.

(3) Rename the bootmgr in the root directory of the USB stick to win7mgr, or copy the bootmgr and then rename it to Win7mgr,1-21 as shown.

"description" Whether you are installing Windows 7 or Windows 10, Windows Server R2, Windows Server 2016,bootmgr are renamed to Win7mgr because the PC store USB boot tool will look for this file, The boot system is loaded with this file.

With these steps, the USB flash drive installs the Windows operating system in a way that is similar to "CD-ROM" booting.

But what if you want to install Windows 7 and want to install Windows 10, Windows Server R2, Windows Server 2016? Prepare a few U-disk, I used to do so. This is what I said earlier, there are multiple USB sticks, each USB flash drive can install different operating system reasons.

Until one day, I feel that this is a bit too much trouble, I would like to make "multi-in-one" of the U disk. I have integrated the following discs:

After making a good tool, you can use it to install the operating system.

(1) Plug the USB drive to the computer, restart the computer, enter the BIOS settings, set up the latest USB flash drive, or after the BIOS self-test press the Boot menu to select the hotkey, in the Boot menu, select the USB stick to boot.

(2) Computer shop 6.5 start interface 1-26, as shown by default, the cursor will stay in the last item "try to boot from the local hard disk" and countdown 30 seconds. If the computer reacts slowly, especially in some branded servers, when this interface may appear, the countdown takes effect for 30 seconds, and the USB drive boot tool attempts to boot from the hard drive. To avoid this situation, you can press the UP and down cursor keys (↑↓) when the screen is black to prevent booting from the hard disk. Select 11th "Install the original WIN7/8/10 system".

(3) Select "Install Win7 system directly", as shown in 1-27.

(4) In Windows Installer, click the Next button, as shown in 1-28.

VI installing VMware ESXi using the tool u disk

The steps to install VMware ESXi using a tool USB stick are as follows.

(1) Plug the USB drive to the computer, restart the computer, enter the BIOS settings, set up the latest USB flash drive, or after the BIOS self-test press the Boot menu to select the hotkey, in the Boot menu, select the USB stick to boot.

(2) Select the 10th item "Start custom Iso/img file", as shown in 1-32.

(3) Select "Auto Search and list all files in the DND directory" and press ENTER, 1-33.

(4) List all files in the current DND directory, as shown in 1-34. Select the image of ESXi to install here Press ENTER to boot the ISO file.

(5) For example, in Figure 1-34, select the 15th item, then load and boot the file, as shown in 1-35.

(6) Follow the wizard to install ESXi, which is not covered in this article.

Seeing this, some readers may ask, since the ISO file for VMware ESXi can be loaded directly to the ISO of Windows? For example, loading Windows 7, Windows Server R2 ISO, after practical testing this is not possible. To install Windows in a way that is similar to disc booting, you will need to refer to the previous section for more information. The ISO file in the DND directory is loaded and is actually tested to load the ISO for all current VMware ESXi. Some Linux ISO, panabit ISO files, and some images of smaller IMG or other ISO files.

Figure 1-36 is the 6.2 version of the PC store USB boot disk maker that loads the files listed in the DND directory. In comparison, the 6.2 or 6.3 version of the bootable USB drive, the effect may be better.

Seven U disk boot tool upgrade, restore

Computer Shop u disk Startup Disk production tools have been upgraded, if you want to use the new version to re-create the boot disk, you need to "restore the USB flash drive", and then click the "New Production" button to re-create the current USB flash drive as a boot USB, 1-37 shown.

Because each time you make a bootable USB flash drive, a hidden partition is created in front of the USB flash drive, and the hidden partitions created by different versions are not the same size, but the overall is getting bigger and larger, as shown in 1-38, which is a hidden partition of size 558MB created by version 6.2.

The 7.01 version of the hidden partition is 708MB and also occupies a 448MB partition, as shown in 1-39.

If you want to restore the USB drive to its original state and release the hidden partition, you can select "Restore USB drive" in Figure 1-37, or use the Diskgenius tool to remove all hidden partitions from the USB flash drive and repartition them.

"Note" Whether you are upgrading a USB flash drive, restoring a USB flash drive or using Diskgenius to remove hidden partitions and repartition them, the data on the USB drive will be lost, so please back up the important data in the USB flash drive before doing this.
