From NX3.0 to NX9.0, the default is 5%. But the accuracy of the actual calculation is not the same. The "cutting step" is a cutting parameter that is dedicated to contour milling.
The cutting step allows you to control the linear distance along the cutting direction between the tool position points on the wall geometry. The smaller the step size, the more accurate the tool track moves along the part geometry profile. The system will apply the value entered for the "cut step" as long as the step does not violate the tolerance/part within the specified part.
The tool diameter and designation are used to adjust the size of the cutting step to prevent the small features from being ignored, as shown below.
