The traditional backup and recovery model is characterized by a dedicated disk and tape system for each specific host server, each of which backs up its own data to a locally attached tape drive or tape library, which is essentially the DAS direct-attached storage. This design is less efficient for tape resources because it is not available to other servers even if the tape drive of one server is idle. In addition, these backup devices are connected directly to the server and require large server resources. This kind of backup is done by the need to surf the internet at night without too many people.
The above-mentioned storage backup method of Das means that the backup storage is slow, the reliability is low and the applicable scale is smaller than the current enterprise storage System. Currently, it is mainly used in some small and medium enterprises.
Now there is an improved LAN network data backup and recovery system. It is a more enterprise-oriented backup and recovery solution that overcomes some of the drawbacks of a dedicated tape scenario with the following architecture. This model uses a primary backup and recovery server to control tape backup resources while using advanced backup software such as Veritas NetBackup, Legato Networker, and Tivoli Strorage Manager to control the backup and recovery process. The backup server receives data from other servers on the LAN or WAN, and then stores the data on several disk and tape resources. This centralized approach not only significantly increases the utilization of tape resources, significantly reduces the cost of deploying faster, more reliable tape drives and tape libraries, but also uses dedicated servers for backup and recovery activities to mitigate network server stress and enhance backup and recovery performance.
One of the main drawbacks of this scenario is that the network may bottleneck the backup and recovery process and affect the system's ability to meet backup and recovery time requirements. Because backup and recovery workloads can be much larger than normal network loads, traditional gigabit networks may be incompetent.
The above disadvantages can be remedied by the San network architecture, a data backup and recovery system that is detached from LAN or WAN, and its network architecture is similar to SAN storage scenarios.
The full duplex performance of the Fibre Channel switch 2GB/S can significantly improve backup and recovery performance. In addition, Fibre Channel can transmit large amounts of data with higher efficiency and greater reliability than IP network. Two commonly used SAN backup and recovery scenarios are often referred to as "no LAN" and "No Server" backup and Recovery models.
