Database Backup Types

1. Cold Standby (Cold Standby)
Cold backup usually backs up production system databases on a regular basis and stores the backup data on tape, disk, and other media. The backed up data is usually in an inactive state and is activated only when the production database system is available due to a fault. The timeliness of cold backup data depends on the latest database backup. The Cold Standby period of the database is generally long.
2. Hot Standby (Warm Standby)
Hot Standby usually requires a backup database system. It is similar to Cold Standby, except that when the production database fails, the business can be restored through the data of the backup database. Therefore, the recovery time of Hot Standby is much shorter than that of Cold Standby. Many hot backups are implemented by constantly loading production database logs to the backup database. The timeliness of hot backup data also depends on the latest database backup.
3. Full Hot Standby)
Full hot backup is the highest level of database backup. Full Hot Backup requires a backup database system that is activated like the production database. In addition, the production database and the backup database system are completely synchronized, and all modifications to the production database are also implemented on the backup database. The implementation of full hot standby usually requires complex hardware and software technologies. Therefore, compared with cold standby and Hot Standby, its recovery requires a higher cost. However, it also has the shortest recovery time, which is especially important for some important business systems.
