For database administrators, monitoring databases plays an important role. Compared with commercial database products such as Oracle and SQL Server, open-source databases have consistently performed poorly in this respect, however, after MySQL released its Enterprise Edition, it brought a good news to Enterprise database administrators who use this open-source database: MySQL Enterprise Monitor ). The following describes the powerful tool.
With the latest MySQL Enterprise Monitor, the database administrator can not only obtain advanced data replication and database monitoring functions, but also simplify the installation, for MySQL Community edition, it can help administrators to install and maintain databases.
MySQL Enterprise monitor Fall 2007 provides three levels of services: silver, gold, and white gold. I tested the platinum edition with the most features, and its price per server is USD 4999 per year.
Fall September, an enterprise monitor launched in March 2007, includes a Service proxy, which must be installed on every monitored MySQL server. There is also a service manager, it uses a Java service on a Windows or Unix server to collect MySQL and operating system data from each MySQL server within its monitoring scope. A MySQL database is used as an information warehouse, the Service Manager is used to display and Report Server health status.
For MySQL database administrators, one of the biggest reasons to consider using Enterprise monitors is that it allows administrators to visually manage multiple MySQL servers in groups, instead of logging on to every system as before. Although these features are already very common in commercial databases, MySQL, which was commercialized two years ago, has taken a big step forward through this version of Enterprise monitor.
Enterprise Monitor also provides a Web-Based Enterprise panel for database administrators to view charts and event data of the monitored server. I can use this Enterprise panel to configure the enterprise monitor to maintain monitoring of the system, get updates from MySQL, and view events and modify settings.

Database administrators who run key business applications on MySQL Databases should consider using a specific version of MySQL Enterprise monitor. It also allows me to easily add slave system functions, which can significantly reduce the management cost of enterprise databases.
One of the key functions of the MySQL Enterprise monitor is its recommender function, database administrators can use it to create complex rules to monitor and report on the management, memory usage, performance, replication, planning, and security of MySQL servers. These rules have been debugged and can be applied to most typical MySQL servers. However, you can easily copy and edit the rules to create a custom monitor. In my own tests, I used the default settings.
MySQL Enterprise monitor makes it easy to manage MySQL databases with master-slave relationships. In MySQL with master-slave relationships, for backup or performance considerations, one or more databases from one master server can be automatically mirrored to other slave servers.
In a large enterprise environment, it is troublesome to keep track of these master-slave relational databases. In this version of MySQL Enterprise monitor, new features include automatic detection and group management of the master-slave relationship. To test this function, I have made several modifications to the replication relationship of the MySQL server in the test environment. The MySQL Enterprise monitor can easily maintain synchronous modifications. In very large environments, most Database Administrators cannot record each replication pair as a document. The value of such services is immeasurable.
The replication recommender rules are only provided in the MySQL Enterprise monitor of the gold and platinum editions. It briefly describes when binary logs are no longer needed in the replication topology. Several other new improvements in the recommended replication rules include the ability to immediately point out the time when a database communication error occurs to help ensure that the problem is recorded and corrected.
In addition to 19 replication rules, there are more than 80 other methods in this MySQL Enterprise monitor version, including virtual memory and querying the buffer efficiency of different servers displayed in the form of groups.
The MySQL Enterprise monitor requires that a proxy be installed on each monitored MySQL server. On each of my Windows 2003 Server testing systems, this proxy occupies about MB of memory. Like most other proxies, this MySQL Enterprise monitor agent needs to have its own maintenance plan.
In my tests, the Service Manager can only work with agents in the same MySQL Enterprise monitor version. Agents of earlier versions must be upgraded before they can be used with the latest MySQL Enterprise monitor components.
