Article title: open-source community debate Topic 2: Standard organization that leads to a different path. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.

[Editor's note] how can we develop a true technical standard? Is it necessary for the International Organization for Standardization to repeatedly check, debate, and vote? What if it is only an Rubber stamp locked by the manufacturer? Linus Torvalds, the father of Linux, said the true standards should begin with the foundation. This article is part 1 of the open source community debate topic series. In the first part, we introduced the debate on the development of the Linux kernel. in the second part, we will take a look at the open-source community's views on the standardization process.

[Comment] when Microsoft successfully turned its Office Open XML (OOXML) into an international standard last year, many people inside and outside the Open source community, this is a very important event.

The entire process of OOXML becoming an international standard is very suspicious and has been opposed by many countries and enterprises around the world, however, the final decisions of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have shocked, doubted, and even angry many people.

The mocking voice of this incident has continued until today. we can also hear people arguing whether the standardization process has been completely damaged. One central question of all arguments is: has the standard become a weapon to lock the manufacturer, or is openness still guaranteed?

Standard organizations have become a stage for politicians and businessmen

"I 've been away from the standardization organization because it's a gathering of mean people and politicians, and I really don't want to have anything to do with it," he said ."

Towoz said about OOXML becoming an international standard, "everyone involved in this must be crazy, and everything is so disgusting ."

Towoz asserted that such standards will certainly not become one of the most important standards.

"I personally strongly believe that the often problematic standards are the so-called fact standards, that is, they first become industry fact standards and then be recognized, rather than becoming standards in advance. This reminds me of the original POSIX.1 standard. it turns out to be a very good and very successful standard, but this is because it is implemented only after practical transformation, instead of trying to create a new standard."

For the intersection between openness and standards, towoz said, "openness will ultimately generate standards ."

However, towoz didn't spend much time worrying about this issue. he said, "My job is to develop the best technology, or to be more accurate, is to develop technologies that can bring better experience to people. I will not worry about standard organizations and vendor politics. I have less energy ."
