Debian is spreading images over the network through hundreds of servers ). Using servers that are closer to you may increase the download speed and reduce the burden on the central server and the global network.
Debian images can be divided into primary and secondary sites. Definition:
The main image site has enough bandwidth to go online 24 hours a day, and has a well-remembered name such as ftp. <Country> .Debian.org.
These image sites are automatically updated along with the Debian archives.
Secondary Image sites may have control over what they mirror (based on space restrictions ). Being a secondary image site does not mean it is slower or less updated than other primary image sites.
Whether it is a primary or secondary image site, use the site closest to you to get the fastest download speed. A program named netselect can be used to determine which site has the minimum latency. download programs such as wget or rsync are used to determine which sites have the maximum output bandwidth. Note that geographic closeness may not be the most important factor in determining which site is best for you.
