Definition and design principles of feedback information

As an interactive design, feedback is the most common form of expression, so as a qualified interaction or UI designer there must be a systematic understanding of the design of feedback information.

There are two different categories of "Feedback" on a UI:

From the form :
Tools/Information Tips (Tool/info tips)
In-place information (In-place Messages)
Balloon-like notice (balloons)
dialog box (Dialog Boxes)

From the content :
Info (info)
Warning (Warning)
Errors (Error)
Confirmation (Confirmation)

Note: The concept of "alert" is not used here because it is a combination of "form (dialog) + content (all four)". It is divided from the angle of "function".

The definition and design principle of feedback information:
(i) Tools/information Tips (Tool/info tips)

definition :
A tool/informational hint (hereinafter referred to as "hint") refers to a small pop-up window that is used to annotate or accurately describe the object being pointed to, such as a toolbar control, icon, graphic, button, link, and so on. Hints can be viewed as a form of progressive expanded controls (progressive disclosure).

Brief Principles
1. The trigger mode is the mouse hover, when the user clicks the control, moves the mouse, or prompts the timeout to remove. The hint itself does not require further user interaction.
2. Provided in addition to error, Warning and status descriptionAuxiliary TypeInformation content. The essential information of the main task should not use the hint, should be placed directly in the UI.

3. The information to be prompted should beConcisePractical。 Avoid large pieces of text without formatting (hard to read), avoid providing users with obvious information or just repeat text on the screen.

4. Set a reasonable display time:
Show: In order to show the hint, the mouse pointer must remain fixed for the time, generally 0.5s.
reproduce: Refers to the time when the mouse pointer moves from one target to another, usually 0.1s. Shorter recurrence times can be easily viewed by users.
removed from: Refers to how long after the hint will automatically disappear, generally 5s.
5. In accordance withUnifiedThe way to use hints, by raisingPredictabilityTo improve it'scan be found。 If you are prompted for some objects, you should also provide hints to all similar users who might want to get the auxiliary information. The prerequisite is to ensure that these hints are useful and conform to principle 2.
6. Avoid shielding the user may go to see or manipulate the object, even if it will cause the mouse pointer and hint separation. This separation is not a problem because the relationship between the object and its hints is still very clear.

7. Use caution with hints. Don't take hints as a remedy for design. If graphics, buttons, or other objects require a user to view the prompts repeatedly, this is a bad design. The design should be modified.
