When the fusion architecture vendor nutanix announced that it had reached an OEM cooperation with Dell, many people questioned Dell's ability to develop its own integrated architecture solutions, in fact, Dell does have related solutions, from entry level to enterprise, and why is Dell keen to cooperate with nutanix. At the 2014 Dell Technology Forum, the announcement of the Dell Blue Thunder project reiterated Dell's overall strategy for software-defined storage: in addition to developing software-defined storage solutions, Dell also supports software-defined storage solutions for other companies. "No vendor's SDDC (software-defined data center) and SDS (software-defined storage) solutions are the best, therefore, it may be Dell's best choice to provide users with flexibility and diversity."
The Dell blue ray program can be understood in three layers:
First, based on the existing storage solutions, we need to add SDS-related software so that the existing storage solutions can gradually transition to software-defined storage. The Dell SC series is the best example. By enabling existing storage solutions to support openstack or adding "orchestration" software, you can achieve the above objectives. Dell is already doing this.
Second, implement "separation of Software and Hardware ". For new loads such as VDI, Dell can also enable SDS software to run on standard x86 hardware through the separation of hardware and software. The real SDS should be purely software. Dell has recognized this and is ready to make a difference, such as increasing investment in management software, but it has not yet implemented specific products.
Third, Dell will support other third-party software-defined storage products. For example, the Dell SC series currently supports the integrated architecture software of nutanix. Through the "Blue ray" plan, Dell has gathered software-defined storage vendors under the "Blue ray", such as hypervisior vendors such as Microsoft and VMWare, and Object Storage. Dell will do more optimizing configuration, testing and verification to support these solutions, and work with these partners to provide technical support and best practices.
Dell's blue ray plan shows that Dell uses both its own IP address and the power of its partners. The Software Defined by Dell is actually defined by the customer. What Dell does is to provide more choices based on the customer's application needs.
Recently, several IT manufacturers have "split", which leads to debate over the issue of "splitting" and "merging. Dell's point of view is: for complex applications such as data centers involving computing, storage, network, management, and many other components, we should adopt a converged architecture, some simple applications can use traditional servers and storage.
At this Dell Technology Forum, Dell also stressed the importance and necessity of the "hyper-converged" architecture. Hyper-converged is the most extensive integration of computing, computing, storage, network, and management based on virtual machines. Dell said the customer's direct feedback was that integration was required and a vendor that could provide an integrated infrastructure.
The integration of the Dell PS series and the SC series is proceeding in an orderly manner. The brand of compellent is no longer used, and all of them have become the SC series. The iSCSI functions of PS series have also been integrated into the newly released sc4020. For Dell, integration is the trend of the times, the advantage of Dell, and the long-term strategy of Dell.
