At present, desktop computer dual hard disk is not a rare thing, but many friends of the two hard drive set method is not very understanding, and in the case of error settings, it is also very easy to have problems, here we found a dual hard disk set graphics and text detailed tutorials, hope to help the needs of friends.

I. Precautions before installation

install dual hard drive before the first to check the basic situation inside the computer, such as whether there is a second hard disk space, data cable has no free interface, the computer power can support two hard disk stable operation. These conditions are important for installing a dual drive.

Second, jumper settings

The next step is to set the jumper for the two hard drives, one for the master Device and the other from the disk (Slave Device). There is a problem here we have to figure out, that is, which is the hard drive to set the main disk more reasonable, many friends think it is a higher capacity of the hard disk as the main disk, this view is wrong, the correct way should be a better performance of the hard drive as the main disk. For a simple example, you had a Ⅱ20GB hard drive (7200 RPM) and later acquired a 60GB Seagate U6 hard Drive (5400 rpm), so you should set the cool fish ⅱ20gb as the main dish because it's faster.

The jumper methods between different hard disks may differ, but they are basically the same. Let's take a piece of Seagate's Cool fish Ⅳ (7200 rpm) and a one-step star-Diamond generation (5400 rpm) to explain how the jumper is set up.

First we have to look at the jumper instructions for the two hard drives, which are generally located on the front or back of the hard drive (Figure 1, figure 2). Then follow the instructions to set the Seagate cool Fish Ⅳ as the main disk (Figure 3), and set the star-drilling generation as a from disk (Figure 4) (Note: If two hard drives use a single data line, you can do without jumper settings). After completing the jumper settings, install the two hard drives into the appropriate locations within the chassis and connect the data and power cables. When connecting to a data cable, be aware that the blue end is connected to the motherboard's IDE interface, but if you are using an earlier DMA/33 data cable, there is no such requirement. After you complete this step, the installation on the hardware is complete. Next we can turn on the power of the computer, and enter the bios of the motherboard, you can see that the BIOS has detected two hard disk capacity and master-slave relationship, which means that the two hard drive has been installed successfully.

Third, data line selection

As we can see from Figure 1 and 2, there is a enable cable select jumper in addition to the master and slave jumpers on the hard drive. If the user sets this jumper, then the master-slave relationship between the hard disk will be determined by the data line. This is a relatively rare method of master and slave disk setting

But at this point can not be two hard disk in any one of the master and slave disk jumper set, and the need for two hard drives will be jumper changes to the "Enable Cable Select" state. While wiring must pay attention to, whether the use of 40-core DMA/33 line, or 80-core DMA/66 line, away from the motherboard of the hard drive interface is always connected to the main disk, and the motherboard near the interface of the hard disk is always recognized as a from the disk.

In fact, the use of data line settings to determine the master-slave relationship, is the installation of dual-disk is very flexible means. For example, you can make a bootable boot disk with two hard drives, and when a hardware failure occurs on the main disk, simply swap the hard drive to the master interface and it becomes a system disk. This method is especially suitable for users who often change their hard drive back and forth.

Four, the disk character staggered solution

Now, let's talk about the "disk interleaved" problem that often occurs when you use a dual hard disk. The so-called "disk intersection" is when we installed a dual hard drive, assuming that each hard disk is divided into three zones, then the normal situation should be the main disk of each drive in front, from the disk drive in the rear. But the actual situation is often, the main disk of C, E Drive squeezed between the disk from the F drive, that is, it will give users a lot of trouble with the use of, such as the original installation of a single hard drive software running abnormally. At present, there are several ways to solve the "disk intersection" problem.

1. Shielding method

For two hard drives with primary partitions, the primary hard drive can be set to auto in the BIOS settings and will be set to none from the hard drive (Figure 5). This eliminates the "disk interleaving" problem when you boot into Windows, and it also applies to Linux operating systems

If the primary partition of a dual hard disk is equipped with a different operating system, you can start the operating system on another hard drive by changing the state of the hard drive in the BIOS setup. However, this method also has some limitations, that is, in a single DOS mode will not be able to find in the BIOS in the shield of the hard drive, it can not read and write operation.

2. Zoning Law:

This method is also more practical, the method is to create a primary partition on the primary hard disk, and divide the hard disk into extended partitions, and then partition the logical partitions so that the "disk interleaving" phenomenon can be avoided, but it is easy to remove data from the hard disk in this way. So be sure to do the backup work before you do the operation.

Other ways to avoid the "disk intersection" and the use of software such as Partition Magic settings, some hard disk manufacturers also introduced a special set of software, because the use of relatively simple, in this we do not introduce too much.

Before installing two hard drives, you should first determine whether there is a second hard drive in the chassis, if only 5 inch slot position, you need to prepare a cage. Also, determine if the power plug, power is sufficient. When installing two hard drives on a single line, you should set the two hard disks to be the main and from the disks as you wish, so that you can use them after installation. The main, from disk settings can be done in the following two ways.

1. Set by the hard disk jumper

All IDE devices, including hard disks, use a set of jumpers to determine the main, from-state after installation. Most of the hard disk jumpers are located between the power connection seat and the data cable connection socket (also on the circuit board), usually consisting of 3 groups (6 or 7) or 4 group (8 or 9) pins plus one or two jumper caps. In addition, the main disk (master), the From disk (Slave), and the cable selection (Cableselect) Jumper method must also be printed on the front or back of the hard disk.

Various types of hard disk jumper methods and markings are similar, for example, the jumper of the hard disk is usually 9-pin 4 groups, one of which is called "Key" for positioning so that users correctly identify the jumper location.

2. Fixed by hard disk jumper and 40 core special hard drive cable

This master, from disk setting is to first set the hard disk jumper after "cable selection is valid", and then the main, from the disk to connect to the corresponding hard drive cable plug. The setting of the hard disk State depends on the connection plug between the hard disk and the hard drive cable. The disk that is usually connected to the middle of the hard drive line is the main disk, and the disk connected to the end of the hard drive line is the disk. When you set up the master, from disk in this way, you must set the jumper for all IDE interface devices (including optical drives, etc.) that are joined to the same hard drive line in the cable selection location.

Can determine the hard drive main, from the disk state 40 core hard drive cable is specially made. The method is to make the normal 40-core hard Drive line 28th (from the 1th red line or other mark start number) in the position between the two hard drive plugs, cut off after the tangent of the attention can not break other lines. The advantage of using a specially crafted hard drive cable to determine the main and disk state is that it is easy to use. When you need to swap the hard drive master, from the state as long as the connection of the hard drive cable plug location, you do not need to remove the hard drive to the jumper.

Problems to be noticed in installing dual hard disks

1. When adding or upgrading a hard disk, try to choose the same hard drive as the brand. Compatibility issues may occur because of the use of different branded hard disks on the same hard drive line. If the computer is not detected or detected only a piece of hard disk, the two hard drive jumper settings are no errors on the premise that you can disconnect the original use of the hard disk and then reboot, if the computer can detect a new hard drive, then is two hard drive compatibility problem. The workaround is to use the new hard drive on the second hard drive line. If you must use the same hard drive line, then swap the main and the two hard drives for a relationship.

In addition, if the newly added hard disk and the optical drive and other devices together on the second hard drive line, pay attention to the optical drive, such as the main, from the disk settings not with the new hard drive conflict, otherwise the motherboard can not detect the new hard drive or find the original CD-ROM problem.

2. Pay attention to the problem of staggered disk characters. In the case of multiple partitions, the order of the hard disk partitions is somewhat erratic: the primary partition of the primary hard disk is still considered a C disk by the computer, and the primary partition of the second hard drive is considered d, followed by the other partitions of the first hard drive, which are arranged from E, then the other partitions of the second hard drive, followed by the last letter of the first hard drive. This may cause the system or some software to be abnormal after installing the dual hard drive.

To add a second hard drive after the letter does not change, the solution has two: if you only use WIN98, relatively simple, in the CMOS will be the second hard drive to none, but in pure DOS do not recognize the second hard drive. The second method is to partition the second hard drive after the two hard drives are removed, eliminating its primary DOS partition and only dividing it into extended partitions. The letter will not be interleaved. Of course, if the first hard disk has only one partition, there is no problem of the intersection of disk characters. In addition, some computer hard disk vendors provide some auxiliary software for solving the problem of staggered hard disk.

3. After the installation of dual hard drive to pay attention to cooling, two hard disk space can not be too small, and try not to overclocking.
