A regular expression (the widely known "regex") is a string or a character sequence. It is very powerful as a search string!

In a text editor or text processor, regular old-style searches only allow simple matching. Regular Expressions can achieve this simple search. It also allows you to further search by mode. For example, two digits are followed by a letter, or three letters are followed by a hyphen.

This pattern matching allows you to do more useful tasks, such as verifying fields (phone numbers, email addresses), checking user input, and performing more advanced text operations.
