Determine hardware and software requirements (Office Sharepoint Server)

For hardware and software requirements, the scope of installing Office Sharepoint Server 2007 can be limited to one computer (independent installation) or multiple computers (server farm ). The installation requirements depend on the availability and expansion requirements of the solution. This article introduces the minimum and recommended hardware requirements for independent installation and deployment and server farm deployment. This article also lists the required software for installing Office Sharepoint Server 2007. This document does not provide guidance on how to select a topology or hardware based on availability or performance and capacity requirements. For more information about designing solutions that meet these requirements, see planning redundancy (Office Sharepoint Server ). The hardware and software requirements described in this article apply to x32-bit and x64-bit systems. However, if the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 is installed, and then the enable32bitapponwin64 registry key is modified to make Internet Information Server (IIS) run in 32-bit simulation mode, office Sharepoint Server 2007 cannot be installed. To install a 32-bit or 64-bit Office Sharepoint Server 2007, you must run IIS in 64-Bit mode.

Note:
Itanium-based systems are not supported.

In the server farm, 32-bit servers and 64-bit servers can be used together. However, this solution is not recommended because performance problems may occur. For example:

• For front-end web servers using the round robin mechanism, 32-bit servers will become the bottleneck.

• If the 64-bit front-end web server calls a 32-bit SQL Server database, a bottleneck may occur when SQL server does not have sufficient resources. This can also happen if a 64-bit indexer is used for a 32-bit SQL Server database.

If the environment requires a heterogeneous server architecture, we recommend that youProgramThe layer uses heterogeneous (32-bit or 64-bit) servers, for example, 32-bit servers for all front-end web servers.

If the performance of the server farm in a heterogeneous environment is faulty, the recommended solution is to migrate all the SharePoint farm servers to the 64-bit architecture. We strongly recommend that you prepare a migration plan to move it to a pure 64-bit environment as soon as possible. Our support and test data show that SharePoint products and technologies installed on 64-bit servers can significantly improve system throughput and performance during load peaks.

Note:
When a 32-bit server is migrated to a 64-bit server, the same-source server may not be maintained on each layer during the migration. However, performance problems only occur during the migration process.

Independent Installation

You can install Office Sharepoint Server 2007 on a single computer using one of the following methods:

• Select "Basic ".

• In the Office Sharepoint Server 2007 installer, select "advanced" and then select "independent ".

Hardware requirements

The following table lists the minimum and recommended hardware requirements for deploying Office Sharepoint Server 2007 (including Microsoft SQL Server 2005 express edition) on an independent installation.

Software requirements

Because Office Sharepoint Server 2007 is built based on Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, the requirements for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 also apply to Office Sharepoint Server 2007.

Note:

Since the Office Sharepoint Server 2007 installation and Configuration Wizard will mail many components, if you uninstall Office Sharepoint Server 2007 and then install Office Sharepoint Server 2007 on the same computer, the installer may fail when creating the configuration database, which will cause the entire installation process to fail. You can delete an existing configuration database or use the psconfig command to create a new configuration database to avoid this problem.

2007 Microsoft Office systems use a common installer, and the features provided in Office Sharepoint Server 2007 installation depend on the product ID (PID) Key you specified during installation. This means that if you specify different PID keys (for example, a PID key for different Office Sharepoint Server 2007 versions), even if you use the same installation source, the functions provided by the installation are also different.

Database

When you perform basic installation, SQL Server 2005 express edition is automatically installed. When performing advanced installation on an independent computer that has Microsoft SQL server installed, make sure that the computer meets the hardware and software requirements of the database server. For more information, see database servers later in this article.

Note:
If you install Office Sharepoint Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP 1) on Windows Server 2007, the installer installs windows internal Database Service Pack 2 (SP2 ).

Due to Windows License Restrictions, if you use Windows Server 2003 web edition in a single server environment, you can only perform Advanced Front-end Web Server installation. This is because you cannot install the full SQL Server version on Windows Server 2003 web edition. In this solution, you must install the full SQL Server version compatible with Windows Server 2003 for use with Office Sharepoint Server 2007. Windows Server 2003 web edition does not support basic installation of Office Sharepoint Server 2007. However, you can install SQL Server 2005 express edition or SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) (wmsde ).

Important:
You must update SQL Server 2000 to the latest service pack, that is, SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4. For more information, see Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink? Linkid = 86989 & clcid = 0x804)

Operating System

Office Sharepoint Server 2007 runs on Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later. We recommend that you apply all key updates. You can use the following Windows Server 2003 Versions:

• Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition

• Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

• Windows Server 2003 datacenter Edition

• Windows Server 2003 web edition

Due to Windows License Restrictions, if you use Windows Server 2003 web edition in a single server environment, you can only perform Advanced Front-end Web Server installation. This is because you cannot install the full SQL Server version on Windows Server 2003 web edition. In this solution, you must install the full SQL Server version compatible with Windows Server 2003 for use with Office Sharepoint Server 2007. Windows Server 2003 web edition does not support basic installation of Office Sharepoint Server 2007. However, you can install SQL Server 2005 express edition or SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) (wmsde ).

Important:
You must update SQL Server 2000 to the latest service pack, that is, SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4. For more information, see Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink? Linkid = 86989 & clcid = 0x804)

Office Sharepoint Server 2007 management features require Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or Internet Explorer 7.0 with the latest service pack.

Important:
Office Sharepoint Server 2007 requires the Active Directory Service for field deployment. Therefore, Office Sharepoint Server 4.0 cannot be installed in a Windows NT 2007 domain farm.

From Office Sharepoint Server 2007 SP1, you can now install Office Sharepoint Server 2008 on Windows Server 2007. For Windows Server 2003 operating systems, you must download and run the installer and the SharePoint product and Technical Configuration Wizard. You cannot install Office Sharepoint Server 2008 without service pack on Windows Server 2007.

Windows Components

After installing the operating system and applying all key updates, you must enable Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 to configure your computer as a Web server, including:

• Public files

• WWW

• Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)

You must configure the server to use "IIS 6.0 Working Process Isolation Mode ". This is the default setting in the all-new installation. However, if you have upgraded from IIS 2000 on Windows Server 5.0, "Run WWW Service in IIS 5.0 Isolation Mode" is enabled ", you must change this setting to use "IIS 6.0 Working Process Isolation Mode ".

Note:
You must have Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 installed to install Office Sharepoint Server 2008 SP1 on Windows Server 2007.

To enable email notification, you must configure the incoming and outgoing email settings. To configure email notification sending, you must specify the SMTP email server. To configure your installation so that the SharePoint site can receive and archive incoming emails, you must install the iis smtp service.

Important:
The following components are required to correctly run Office Sharepoint Server 2007: Web Server role, Microsoft. NET Framework 3.0, and Windows internal database. Do not uninstall these components. Otherwise, Office Sharepoint Server 2007 stops running.

Microsoft. NET Framework 3.0

Before installing Office Sharepoint Server 2007, you must install Microsoft. NET Framework 3.0 and ensure that ASP. NET 2.0 is enabled.

Note:
You can also use Microsoft. NET Framework 3.5. Can you go to the Microsoft website (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink? Linkid = 110508 & clcid = 0x804) to download. NET Framework 3.5.

To enable ASP. NET v2.0.50727, open web service extensions in the IIS snap-in on the Microsoft Management Console (MMC. If ASP. NET 2.0 is installed on a computer before IIS is enabled, ASP. NET 2.0 must be enabled by running the aspnet_regiis-I command.

Server farm Installation

The main difference between a single server and a server farm topology is that you can use one or more computers to host the following server roles:

• Application Server

• Front-end Web Server

• Database Server

This section describes the minimum and recommended system requirements for each server role. If you install multiple roles on a computer, make sure that the computer meets the minimum requirements for all server roles.

Application server hardware requirements

The following table lists the minimum and recommended hardware requirements for deploying the Office Sharepoint Server 2007 application server.

Software requirements

Because Office Sharepoint Server 2007 is built based on Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, the requirements for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 also apply to Office Sharepoint Server 2007.

We recommend that you install Office Sharepoint Server 2003 on a computer with a new version of Windows Server 2007 SP1 or later and on all key updates.

2007 Microsoft Office systems use a common installer, and the functions provided in Office Sharepoint Server 2007 installation depend on the PID you specified during installation. This means that if you specify different PID keys (for example, a PID key for different Office Sharepoint Server 2007 versions), even if you use the same installation source, the functions provided by the installation are also different.

Software requirements

Because front-end web servers are part of application servers, all functions on front-end web servers can be used on application servers. Prior to adding specific resources to meet the expected requirements in the capacity planning stage, the software requirements of front-end web servers are the same as those of application servers.

Database Server

The computer hosting the database server role must have SQL Server 2000 with the latest Service Pack Installed or Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP1 or later installed. Some advanced features require SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services SP1 or later. Important:
You must update SQL Server 2000 to the latest service pack, that is, SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4. For more information, see Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink? Linkid = 86989 & clcid = 0x804)

Note:
Office Sharepoint Server 2007 supports SQL Server 2008. However, you must first install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 or later and Office Sharepoint Server 2007 SP1 or later to Install SQL Server 2008.
