Difference between SharePoint Foundation and Sharepoint Server

Sharepoint Server 2010 is used to replace Moss 2007. It has two editions: Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition. It uses the SQL Server database;

In earlier versions, STS or WSS was renamed as SharePoint Foundation in 2010;

SPS 2010 includes SharePoint Foundation and Sharepoint Server.

 

Difference between SharePoint Foundation and Sharepoint Server

SharePoint foundation is the core of SharePoint, while Sharepoint Server is only an alternative component to add more advanced features. Sharepoint Server cannot be installed independently. SharePoint foundation can be installed only when it is installed.

  • Displays information in the form of a webpage, usually including one or more Web parts

  • There are many built-in list types for us to store and use different types of information, such as documents, contact books, calendars, etc.
  • Built-in workflow solution, such as automatically notifying relevant personnel when the content is changed
  • Using its Web content management function, you can build an effective Internet application based on enterprise content.
  • Allows you to manage data, meetings, events, and blogs.

 

Simply put, Sharepoint Foundation is a very good platform for collecting and sharing internal enterprise data. Before using its powerful document management function, we need to upload documents to the SPS file library, you can copy and paste them in the Windows directory. It is a good internal network application solution for enterprises and is available for free on Windows 2008 server.

 

However, Sharepoint Foundation is also unavailable, for example:

  • No advanced search function is provided; SharePoint Foundation provides limited search functions, but only allows users to search for data in the current site
  • There are no advanced Web content management functions, such as release control and multi-language support.
  • There are no advanced document management functions, such as the global document code mark, document adjustment, and advanced document usage policies.
  • No management records specified or other important files
  • Infopath forms cannot be used in browsers
  • MS Excel workbooks cannot be used in Web parts.
  • MS Visio 2010 charts cannot be used in Web parts.
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) not supported)

Sharepoint Server 2010

Sharepoint Server 2010 uses the infrastructure of SharePoint foundation, but provides more features. The list not supported by the SharePoint Foundation mentioned above can be provided by Sharepoint server2010.

  • Use the global search function to find different information, regardless of the type and storage location of the information, whether it is based on content or metadata
  • Search for people using social networking
  • Display Information by category among different persons or groups
  • Allows you to import user attributes from ad.
  • Provides higher-level content management features to publish Internet sites or internal enterprise portal sites
  • Globally unique document identifiers and settings
  • Use Form service to display infopath forms in a browser
  • Excel service allows you to use Excel workbooks and charts in Web parts.
  • Use the viso Web part to directly use the MS viso 2010 chart in the browser
  • Business connectivity service allows you to search, display, and edit data in external databases, such as SAP, Oracle, and SQL Server.
  • Each user is provided with a private or shared personal site.
  • Built-in KPIs dashboard

 

All of these features make Sharepoint Server 2010 a good solution to build internet sites with different types of websites and public information, external or enterprise internal interconnected network applications, and flexible enough to provide different information for different people. It is also a good solution for displaying or analyzing KPIs data and business data, such as MS Excel workbooks, and good business intelligence to collect, display, analyze, and mine business data.
