1. Overview

After the virtual machine is installed, two virtual NICs, VMnet1 and VMnet8, are installed by default. VMnet1 is the host Nic and is used to connect to the network using the host method. VMnet8 is the NAT Nic, they are used to connect networks in NAT mode and their IP addresses are randomly generated.

VMware provides three working modes: bridged (Bridge Mode), NAT (network address translation mode), and host-only (host mode only), such. To apply them properly in network management and maintenance, you should first understand the three working modes.

2. bridged (Bridging Mode)

In this mode, the VMnet0 virtual switch is used. The virtual operating system is like an independent host in the LAN. Like the host computer, it can access any machine in the network. In the bridge mode, you can manually configure its TCP/IP configuration information (such as IP address and subnet mask, and it must be in the same network segment as the host machine ), in order to access the Internet through the LAN gateway or router, you can also set the IP address and DNS to "automatically get ". If you want to use VMWare to create a server in the LAN to provide Web or network services for LAN users, you should select the bridge mode.

In the bridge mode, the VMnet0 virtual switch is used. At this time, the virtual machine has an independent IP address like an independent computer on the network and a host.

  • The operating systems A1, A2, A, and B can access each other.
  • The IP addresses of A1 and A2 are "Internet" IP addresses, which can be manually set or automatically obtained.

3. NAT (network address translation mode)

In NAT mode, a virtual machine can access the public network through the network of the host machine through the NAT (Network Address Translation) function. That is to say, you can use the NAT mode to access the Internet in a virtual system. The TCP/IP configuration information of virtual machines in NAT mode is provided by the DHCP server in the VMnet8 virtual network. Therefore, IP and DNS are generally set to "automatically obtained ", therefore, the virtual system cannot communicate with other real hosts in the local area network. The biggest advantage of using the NAT mode is that it is very easy for the virtual system to access the Internet. You do not need to configure any other configurations, but only need the host machine to access the Internet. If you want to use VMWare to install a new virtual system, you can directly access the Internet without manual configuration in the virtual system. We recommend that you use the NAT mode.

The Vmnet8 vswitch is used in NAT mode. In this case, the virtual machine can access other hosts on the network through the "one-way access" of the host. Other hosts cannot access the virtual machine. In NAT mode:

  • A1 and A2 can access B
  • B cannot access A1 and A2
  • A1, A2, and a mutual access
  • The IP addresses of A1 and A2 are lan ip addresses, which can be manually configured or automatically obtained.

4. host-only (host Mode)

In host-only mode, virtual machines can only communicate with virtual machines and hosts, but virtual machines and external networks are isolated, that is, they cannot access the Internet. In host-only mode, the TCP/IP configuration information (such as IP address, gateway address, and DNS server) of the virtual system is dynamically allocated by the DHCP server of VMnet1 virtual network. Use the host-only method:

  • A, A1, and A2 can communicate with each other
  • A1 and A2 cannot access B
  • B cannot access A1 and A2
  • A1 and A2 are lan ip addresses. They can be configured manually or automatically.

In the three modes, the IP addresses of virtual machines can be set to automatically obtained, which will not be changed once automatically obtained (unless manually configured), that is, the IP address after the next restart is the same as the previous one.

5. Explanation of the replicate physical network connection state option

When a single machine uses virtual machines for multiple NICs, laptops, and mobile devices, the Replicate physical network connection state option is selected when switching between a wired network and a wireless network. the IP address of the Virtual Machine Nic is automatically updated, you do not need to reset it.
