First determine the amount of disk space and traffic you need.
How much disk space?
A small or midsize web site requires at least 10MB to 100MB of disk space.
If you only consider HTML pages, their average size is small. Maybe not even 1KB. But if you look at the size of the graphic you use on the page, you'll find that most pictures are much larger than the page itself.
With pictures and other space-consuming elements, each page takes up 5KB to 50KB of server space.
If you plan to use a large number of images and graphic elements (not involving audio files and video files), you may need more disk space.
Before you pick the provider, first identify the disk space you need.
Monthly Flow
A small or midsize site requires at least 1GB to 5GB of data transfer per month.
This can be calculated by multiplying the average page size by the expected page views per month. Assuming your average page size is 30KB and the expected page view is 50,000 pages, you need 0.03MB x 50,000 = 1.5GB.
Large commercial sites typically consume no less than 100GB of traffic per month.
Before you sign a contract with a host provider, you need to understand the following:
- How much is the monthly flow limit?
- If the limit is exceeded, will the site be closed?
- If you exceed the limit, do you need to pay an extra fee?
- Is the host easy to upgrade?
Connection speed
Visitors often use a modem to access your visit, but host providers have a very high connection speed.
In the early days of the Internet, T1 connections were thought to be very fast connections. Today, the connection speed is much faster.
1 bytes equals 8 bits (this is the number of bits that transmit one character). 1 KB is 1024 bits. 1 MB is 1024 KB. 1 GB is 1024 MB.
This is the connection speed that is currently being used on the Internet:

Before you sign a contract, you can try other sites on the provider's server, and it's also a good idea to communicate with other customers.
