[Drawing] New Features of arcgis10 plotting

From: http://bbs.esrichina-bj.cn/ESRI/thread-76312-1-2.html

Plotting is a traditional and permanent topic and the most intuitive means to fully demonstrate the charm and powerful functions of GIS. ArcGIS provides a complete GIS-based production and processing solution, including data processing (Projection Transformation), graphical symbolic, map tagging, graphic editing, and map output/printing. Since ArcGIS 9.2, representation has been introduced in plotting to provide more flexibility and support for data-driven plotting. The forthcoming ArcGIS 10 will be enriched and improved in the aspect of humanization, refinement, batch quantification, and automation of plotting.
1. Humanization
1.1 Representation
Users who have used representation know that when adding a layer with representation in ArcMAP, the default symbol displayed is still single symbol, rather than the symbol style of Rule + geometric effects. In this case, you need to go to the symbology option page of the layer properties dialog box to apply representation.
ArcGIS 10 perfectly solves this problem. When a representation layer is loaded, the Representation symbol style is displayed by default.
1.2 maplex
For a long time, when we browse the map documentation using maplex, the prerequisite is that we have the maplex license. When the license is not available, a prompt box is displayed asking if the label is converted to standard. If conversion is not performed, the map document cannot be viewed.
ArcGIS 10 and later versions will no longer have this problem, making it easier to browse and view map documents.
1.3 Annotation
ArcGIS 10 integrates the annotation toolbar into the editor environment. In this way, the editing of annotation is more flexible and easy to manage. :

Refinement
In addition to creating a beautiful map, you also need to accurately express the information. As people are increasingly demanding on Map Quality and the demand for multi-scale maps is becoming increasingly urgent, plotting is facing the test of refinement.
1.1 Road Integration
This problem is often encountered in the preparation of roads: dual lines are usually displayed as single lines at a small scale, and dual lines at a large scale; in the transition between large and small scales, the following phenomena may occur ,:

ArcGIS 10 provides two solutions to this problem: resolve road conflict and merge divided road. 3:

1.2 road thinning
"There is no road in the world, and when there are more people, it will become a road." The roads at the same level have long, short, wide, and narrow paths. According to incomplete statistics, there are millions of roads in China. How can we intuitively and clearly express the width and width of a road on a map?
Data-driven plotting of versions earlier than ArcGIS 10 can be well reflected on maps. But how can we strip out massive roads to make the map clearer? The thin road network tool in ArcGIS 10 allows you to set the shortest length of the road display and strip the road on the premise of ensuring road connectivity. 4:

1.3 MSD and maplex
As we know, MSD is a performance-optimized map document with smooth line settings and provides the map preview function. In plotting, maplex is inevitably used for tagging in pursuit of high-quality maps. MSD does not support maplex, which is a pity of versions earlier than 10. ArcGIS 10 has improved and improved this. On this basis, you can use its map preview to view the effect more quickly (the effect is the same as that after the cut graph ). In this way, you can preview and view the effect of a map with massive data to adjust the document, without waiting for a long time to cut the map and then viewing the effect and modifying it. It greatly reduces the time cost and has practical value when performing graph cutting.
1.4 Annotation Tool Set
ArcGIS 10 adds a contour annotation tool. Previously, our general operation was to convert the label into annotation, generate an intersection mask, and then use advanced drawing for configuration. The contour note tool integrates this process for easier operations.
The cutting mechanism of ArcGIS Server is to first form a 4096*4096 big image, and then cut the large image to set the pixel to be cut again. Each time a 4096*4096 large image is generated, the line/surface elements in the split line are marked with the same name. If the point elements are fixed in the display direction, some missing annotations still exist. The reason is that it is marked in the first big image. When the second big image is generated, it is marked dynamically according to the display rules. In this case, annotation is the best choice.
Map Server cache annotation tile features and tiled labels to annotation pushed by ArcGIS 10 will generate a larger graph and annotation at all levels based on the tileschema of the cut graph. According to this annotation, we can make detailed adjustments. Labels for large data volumes are converted to annotation, which provides a good solution.
Of course, ArcGIS 10 is also embodied in other aspects in detail, such as adding the geometric effect of the representation arrow and optimizing the polygon annotation of the island.

Triplicate
When a map is prepared, corresponding maps are generated based on different needs. For example, a national thematic map must be generated for each province; or generate a topic chart based on a certain type of grid. How can I automatically output these maps in batches? ArcGIS 10 is now available with the data-driven page function and provides tools (including generating grid or render Network Based on Grid templates) to solve this problem. 6. 7:

ArcGIS 10 provides the dynamic text function. The name and gallery page number can be dynamically displayed by binding an attribute field. In addition, ArcGIS 10 also has extent indicator used to indicate the scope of the gallery, as shown in 8. By setting extent indicator, the current range is highlighted in the lower right corner of the generated Gallery.

When outputting a PDF file, a page option page is added. You can specify the output map page number, page number range, or all maps to output the map. 9.

IV Automation
Arcgis10 provides a native Python package, arcpy, which can access more than 800 GP tools and provides data analysis, data conversion, data management, and automatic drawing functions. Arcpy provides a mapping module for Automated Plotting.

In plotting, you may encounter problems such as data source connection loss (Data Source Path change and other reasons) and data source replacement. In general practice, you need to re-specify the data source in arccatalog. It takes a lot of time and effort to operate on a large amount of data. At this time, we can use arcpy for automatic replacement, saving time and effort. As follows:

Conclusion 5
ArcGIS 10 has made many improvements in plotting and has added many practical tools. Taking full advantage of these functions and tools in combination with practical applications will bring great convenience to the drawing work.
ArcGIS 10, let's look forward to it together!
