In the family, the old PC running XP is getting slower and slower. When firefox is opened on several webpages, it cannot be slowed down. It is difficult to chat about QQ videos. Therefore, I decided to install Ubuntu to play.
The machine is a dual-hard disk. The GB master disk is installed with XP and stores a lot of data accumulated over the years. Another 60 gb ibm glass disk stores movies and Series for reasons of its glass lineage. it is decided to create a partition on the IBM hard disk to install ubuntu, so as to avoid operating the partition table on the GB primary disk. but how can I start linux if the MBR on the master disk is not written to GRUB? I found from the Internet that GRUB4DOS can meet this requirement, so I started to try ubuntu.
In the hard disk management tool under XP, delete the first partition of the IBM glass disk and shut down. To prevent the GRUB from being written to the GB master disk during ubuntu installation, unplug the power cord of the master disk.
Boot the CD boot guide to install ubuntu, the partition wizard selects the second largest free space, after installation, restart to enter ubuntu everything is normal, shut down and plug in the main disk power cord boot. OK, now the machine starts XP from the master disk. Everything is as if it didn't happen, but I lost one partition in my computer and two unknown partitions in disk management.
Now the new version of grub4dos will automatically search for the configuration file menu. lst on the hard disk, which is much easier.
Restart the computer and select gurb4dos from the XP boot menu. lst file. After finding the file, the ubuntu Startup menu is displayed. Select "normal startup" and look forward to the ubuntu startup screen. ah ah. when the problem occurs, gurb reports that the loading has stopped. I thought it should be because the main disk was not mounted at the time of installation, and the disk location corresponding to ubuntu is changed. press e under gurb to enter the editing mode, change root (hd0, 1) to root (hd1, 1), and then press B to start. haha, I saw the ubuntu startup screen. Everything is normal.
The GRUB4DOS will automatically search for the configuration file menu on the hard disk. lst. The problem may be the menu in ubuntu. lst here, I don't want to start it every time I edit it in GURB, So I open/boot/grub/menu. the lst found root (hd0, 1 ). change the root (hd0, 1) Here To root (hd1, 1) and save it.
Restart the computer again and select gurb4dos and start ubuntu normally. Haha, I succeeded.
PS: The network is too slow. The installation of Chinese language packs and online automatic upgrades have been stuck until half past two...
