So, what is grub? GNU Grub (GRand Unified bootloader "Grub") is a multi-OS launcher from the GNU project. Grub is the implementation of a multi-boot specification that allows users to have multiple operating systems at the same time on the computer and select the operating system that they want to run when the computer starts. Grub can be used to select different cores on the operating system partition or to pass startup parameters to those cores. In the X86 architecture of the machine, Linux, BSD or other Unix operating systems of the grub, LILO is the most common, should be said mainstream.

When booting from a hard drive, the BIOS is usually the first sector to turn to the first hard drive, the master boot Record (MBR). Procedures for loading grub and operating systems, including the following steps:

1. load the record. the only thing that the basic boot loader does is load the second boot loader.

2. loading System. such as the Linux kernel. Grub transfers control over the machine to the operating system.

There are several situations in which our problem arises:

1, want to delete Ubuntu, so directly under Windows to delete/format Ubuntu where the partition.

2, adjust the disk, the use of tools to merge/split/adjust/delete partitions, the number of disk partitions has changed.

3, reinstall the system, install Linux to the new partition, the original partition has been formatted, but did not reinstall GRUB2.

4, using Ubuntu Backup tool/derivative manufacturing tools, etc., the primary partition back to 8. In the old version of X, the old version of Grub was grub1, so the GRUB2 was destroyed.

Anyway, it is because the operator does not know that GRUB2 is divided into two parts, part (generally) written on the MBR, the other part is written in a partition of the/boot/grub directory (if/boot separate partition, it is written directly in the corresponding partition of the/grub directory) inside. As a result of the above operation, the part of GRUB2 's MBR could not find the part of the/grub directory (or that part has been deleted).

So what is MBR? MBR, the master boot record, is a boot sector at the forefront of the drive when a hard disk or removable disk partition is on an IBM compatible machine. MBR is not part of any operating system, nor can it be read with the disk operation commands provided by the operating system, but may be modified and rewritten through commands.

I reload the system using the Enter win PE and then ghost recovery. How to solve this problem in win PE. The disk partitioning tool Diskgenuis has a function of rebuilding the MBR, which can reconstruct the MBR and empty the Grub2. This will reboot Windows XP by booting up.
