When Microsoft released the first SQL Server parallel Data Warehouse R2 (SQL Serverparallel data Warehouse, the PDW), The name of the product has been formally modified as the Analysis Service Platform (APS), but in some non-formal situations, the PDW is still reserved.

Introduction to APS
- April 2014 introduced the APS (Analytics Platform System), also known as the PDW (paralleldata Warehouse) ;
- Microsoft Analytics Platform System APS is a Data Warehouse platform with integrated structured and unstructured data
- With Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Quanta (Quanta) and NEC providing APS-based all-in-one, Microsoft is the only contact for customers with hardware and software support. Thus, as a data warehousing device,APS provides the lowest price per unit of storage available for users to store (after compression)
- APS All-in-one is a high-performance and scalable parallel processing device for modern data warehousing needs.
- The APS integration machine integrates the SQL Server PDW Software (a massively parallel processing version specifically designed to run in APs) and an optional hdinsighthadoop Platform (HDP-based Microsoft Hadoop product for Windows edition)
- APS ' Big data capabilities and its included polybase support the use of standard SQL queries to access Hadoop data and join relational data without having to preload data into the Data Warehouse
- This seamless integration between the traditional data warehouse and the Big Data deployment environment enables APS to become a mainstream enterprise-class big Data platform
APS Features
- Is it a massively parallel processing device? (refers to the APS 'all-in-one machine), which can handle highly concurrency and complexity queries in a parallel and distributed manner
- The SQL Server PDW runs within the APS device , which uses an in- memory updatable Row Storage index to improve data load and query response times, up to 50 times times higher than traditional data warehouse systems
- APS has built-in software with reliable, scalable, and high-performance storage features that reduce hardware costs-and it has built-in hardware redundancy that supports fault tolerance
- APS provides an in-memory, updatable field storage index that supports up to 15 times times the data compression rate , saving up to 70% of storage requirements.
- APS is a rack-based system and therefore does not buy too much capacity, starting with a one-fourth rack, which supports modifying the size of the device, and then, in the future, it can be scaled by using the same tools that the traditional SQL Server system scales horizontally when needed.
NEC Integrated Machine
- NEC partnered with Microsoft to launch a powerful SQL Server Pcle SSD, which supports large-scale online transaction processing (OLTP) and Business Intelligence (BI) workloads.
- It is paired with the NEC Express 5800 Scalable Enterprise Server family, which includes a 4U server with up to four Intel Xeon E7 processors and a total of four physical cores.
- The server also comes with 16 available pci-express 3.0 I/O slots and 64 available DDR3 memory slots.
- The NEC database appliance not only provides high-performance data processing, but also installs the HGST Flashmax II PCIe flash memory. The Flashmax II is a multi-layered flash memory element, which means that each unit can store multiple bits of information while integrating the hardware RAID principle optimized for Flash. With the Flashmax II device, the server accommodates up to 8.8TB of flash storage and provides a 8.2GBps logical scan rate.
- According to an overview of the SQL Server FastTrack Data Warehouse (FTDW) Reference Architecture, the NEC all-in-one is built according to a best-practice configuration, and FTDW defines a core balanced architecture for maximizing the hardware throughput of SQL Server data processing , the NEC all-in-one machine uses FTDW configuration to balance CPU cores with I/O channels and the ability to store sequential I/O
Dell Database Appliance
- Dell's database appliance also integrates flash technology from Fusion-io.
- Unlike NEC, The Dell all-in-one machine is not built around a specific platform. Instead, the focus is on enterprise applications, including a broad range of database product support: Mysql, sybase, oracle database, SAP Hana, mongodb, apache Cassandra, and of course SQL Server 2014+
- The Dell all-in-one machine uses the Dellpoweredge R720 2U rack server to support 12TB Flash, 40GB bandwidth, and 2.5 IOPS per second. Flash memory is provided through the Fusion IO memory device and uses adaptive flashback (Adaptive FlashBack) to protect the data. Unlike many raid flash devices that rely on storage configurations, the granularity of data processing for adaptive flashback has been increased to the block level, simplifying management and ensuring business continuity.
- When combined with Fusion-io flash memory, the PowerEdge server can significantly improve the performance of data loads while reducing latency and I/O bottlenecks. Dell All-in-one can be used as a standalone product or as a highly available product that includes Fibre Channel and wireless bandwidth technology
Summary
- The APS all-in-one machine is designed for products that support petabytes of data processing, and it specializes in analyzing the load for BI and MPP, enabling the computation of distributed processing and parallel operations while incorporating unstructured data into the architecture.
- If the SQL Server all-in-one is within your purview, there are a number of options available to you depending on your needs. Remember, this is a fast-changing market, so be sure to do your homework before you make a SQL Server one-machine purchase. They have a lot of advantages, but the corresponding price is very high, you must not want to buy after the discovery that it is not suitable for your needs
