Eight things to do after openSUSE Leap 42.1 is installed

If you have installed openSUSE on your computer, this is what you will do next.

OpenSUSE Leap is indeed a huge Leap that allows users to run a release with the same genes as SUSE Linux Enterprise Edition. Like other systems, you need to make some optimization settings before using it to achieve the best effect.

Below are some things I have done after installing openSUSE Leap on my computer (not applicable to servers ). There are no mandatory settings, and basic installation may be sufficient for you. But if you want to have a better openSUSE Leap experience, let me see it.

1. Add a Packman Repository

For patent and authorization reasons, openSUSE, like many Linux distributions, does not provide software, decoders, and drivers through the official repository (repos. Instead, it is provided through a third party or community repository. The first and most important warehouse is Packman ". Because these repositories are not enabled by default, we need to add them. You can use YaST (one of the features of openSUSE) or command line (as described below ).

Add a Packman repository.

Use YaST to open the software source section. Click "add" and select "Community Repositories )". Click "Next ". Once the repository list is loaded, select the Packman repository. Click "OK", and then click "trust" to import the trusted GnuPG key.

Alternatively, use the following command in the terminal to add and enable the Packman Repository:

  1. zypper ar -f -n packmanhttp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/openSUSE_Leap_42.1/ packman

After the repository is added, you can use more packages. To install any software or package, open the YaST software manager and search for and install it.

2. Install VLC

VLC is a Swiss Army knife in a media player that can play almost any media file. You can install VLC from YaST software manager or software.opensuse.org. You need to install two packages: vlc and vlc-codecs.

If you use a terminal, run the following command:

  1. sudo zypper install vlc vlc-codecs

3. Install Handbrake

If you need to transcode or convert the video file format, Handbrake is your best choice. Handbrake is in the repository we have enabled, so you only need to search and install it in YaST.

If you use a terminal, run the following command:

  1. sudo zypper install handbrake-cli handbrake-gtk

(Note: VLC can also transcode audio and video files .)

4. Install Chrome

The default openSUSE browser is Firefox. However, because Firefox cannot play private media, such as Netflix, we recommend that you install Chrome. This requires additional work. First, you need to import the trust key from Google. Open the terminal and execute the "wget" command to download the key:

  1. wget https://dl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub

Then import the key:

  1. sudo rpm --import linux_signing_key.pub

Go to Google Chrome to download the 64-bit. rpm file. After the download is complete, run the following command to install the browser:

  1. sudo zypper install /PATH_OF_GOOGLE_CHROME.rpm

5. Install the Nvidia driver

OpenSUSE Leap can be used out of the box even if you use Nvidia or ATI graphics cards. However, if you need proprietary drivers for gaming or other purposes, you can install these drivers, but it requires a little extra work.

First, you need to add the Nvidia source. The procedure is the same as adding a Packman repository using YaST. The only difference is that you need to select Nvidia in the Community repository section. After adding the package, go to software management> attach and select "Attach/install all matching recommendation packages ".

O42 nvidia

It opens a dialog box that displays all the packages to be installed. Click OK and follow the instructions. After the Nvidia source is added, you can run the following command to install the required Nvidia DRIVER:

  1. sudo zypper inr

(Note: I have never used AMD/ATI graphics, so I have no experience in this aspect .)

6. Install the media Decoder

After you install VLC, you do not need to install the media decoder, but if you want to use other software to play media, you need to install it. Some developers have written scripts/tools to simplify this process. Open this page and click the appropriate button to install the complete package. It will open YaST and automatically install the package (of course, you also need to provide the root permission password and trust the GnuPG key ).

7. install your favorite email client

OpenSUSE comes with Kmail or Evolution, depending on the desktop environment you have installed. I am using Kmail that comes with KDE Plasma. This mail client still has many areas to be improved. I suggest you try Thunderbird or Evolution. All major email clients can be found in the official repository. You can also refer to [carefully selected Linux best mail client] [7].

8. Allow the Samba service on the firewall

Compared with other releases, openSUSE provides a safer system by default. But it also requires some settings for new users. If you are using the Samba protocol to share files to a local network, you need to allow this service on the firewall.

Allow Samba clients and servers in firewall settings

Open YaST and search for Firewall. In the firewall settings, go to "Allowed Services". You will see a drop-down list under "Service to allow. Select "Samba client" and click "add ". Add "Samba server" in the same way ". Click "Next" and then click "finish". Now you can share files from your openSUSE and access other machines through the local network.

This is almost all the settings I made for my new openSUSE system in my favorite way. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask questions in the comment area.
