Enable DHCP relay proxy for cross-subnet Services (1)

Along with the gradual expansion of the LAN scale, a network is often divided into multiple different subnets, so as to meet the work requirements of different subnets to achieve personalized management requirements. A large LAN usually uses DHCP servers to assign IP addresses to workstations. However, once a LAN is divided into multiple subnets, do we have to create DHCP servers in different subnets to provide IP Address Allocation services for workstations in each subnet? In this case, not only is the operation troublesome, but it is not conducive to the efficient management of LAN networks. In fact, we only need to enable the built-in relay proxy function of the Windows Server System to fully utilize the original DHCP server and provide IP Address Allocation services for multiple different subnets. below, taking a DHCP server as an example to describe how to enable the DHCP relay agent, assists workstations in different subnets to apply for IP addresses across subnets.

Make preparations

Assume that one of the subnets in the LAN has a workstation installed with Windows Server 2003. Now I am going to enable the DHCP relay proxy function on this computer, to provide IP address request transfer services for other subnets in the LAN. However, before enabling the DHCP relay proxy function, we need to configure the workstation as a virtual router to connect two different subnets in the LAN.

Because the Windows Server 2003 system does not enable Routing and Remote Access Services by default, We must install and configure the service manually. When installing the service, you can click "start", "set", and "Control Panel" commands. In the system control panel window that appears, double-click the "Management Tools" icon, double-click the "route and remote access" project in the later interface, so that the system will automatically open the Routing and Remote Access interface shown in 1; right-click the Local Computer icon in the interface and run the "configure and enable Routing and Remote Access" command from the shortcut menu to open the Installation Wizard window for Routing and Remote Access Servers, click the "Next" button in the window to go to the wizard configuration page shown in 2. Select the "custom configuration" option in the window, and then click the "Next" button, select "LAN routing" option (3) in the Wizard window that appears, and click "finish" to exit the Routing and Remote Access Server Installation Wizard window.
