Upgrading from ESXi 5.5 to ESXi 5.5 U1 can be done with ESXCLI, limited to minor versions of the upgrade. If you upgrade across a large version, use update management to upgrade or reinstall ESXi5.5 U1.

1. Download the corresponding Zip upgrade patch package from VMware website, Patch:

2. Upload the upgrade patch package to ESXi storage via FTP tool;
