Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 has many new and enhanced features related to offline address book. By default, Outlook 2003 uses the cache mode configuration. Because the offline address book is generated in the cache mode, it is important to know how to configure the offline address book to make it work effectively in your Microsoft Exchange organization.

 

Question 1: What is the cache mode?
Solution 1:The cache mode is a new default configuration in Outlook 2003, which provides a similar experience with offline configuration in earlier versions of outlook. When you are running in cache mode, your Exchange Mailbox is associated with a local file (. ost files), and the offline address list on your exchange computer is the file set on the client computer (. files. Outlook does not directly communicate with your server, but directly accesses the. ost file and. OAB file on the hard disk. In this way, the network communication between outlook and exchange is greatly reduced.

Question 2: Why does the offline address book be generated in cache mode?
Solution 2:The offline address book contains all user attributes (such as email addresses and names) required by outlook ). With the offline Address Book, Outlook does not have to connect to the Global Catalog to parse the name or open personal details. Instead, outlook can easily obtain this information from the local offline address book.

 

Question 3: Does the offline address book function exactly the same as the global address book?
Solution 3:The offline address book is a snapshot of the available Active Directory directory service information in the global address book. Therefore, some information can be used in the global address book, but cannot be used in the offline address book. The offline address book does not contain the following items available in the global address book:

• Custom Attributes added by the Administrator to Active Directory (for example, the employee ID of each employee)
• Organization hierarchy Information
• Group member information

Outlook must be able to access the server to obtain this information. Therefore, if you are in cache mode and are working online (that is, your connection status indicates "connected "), outlook uses both the offline address book and Global Address Book to provide a complete list of user information. If you are in cache mode and your connection status shows "disconnected" or "offline", you can only see available information in the offline address book.

The offline address book is updated from AM to am every day by default, for example, we have just created an address list Production Department in the EAC of exchange 2013 (see our previous blog post ), when the Outlook client is offline, you cannot see the employee's mailbox in the offline Address Book of the production department, because the offline Address Book table of the Outlook client is downloaded from the server, the offline Address Book of the server is updated every morning, which means that the offline Address Book of the client is not up-to-date, so the employee's mailbox of the production department cannot be seen.
