Exchange 2013 SP1 deployment Series 14: configure the Client Access Protocol (IMAP & POP3)

When Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 is installed, POP3 client connection is not enabled. To enable POP3 client connection, you must start two POP3 services: Microsoft Exchange POP3 service and Microsoft Exchange POP3 Backend service. After POP3 is enabled, Exchange 2013 uses the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) to accept insecure POP3 client communication between Port 110 and port 995.

The Microsoft Exchange POP3 service runs on the Exchange 2013 computer that runs the client access server role. The Microsoft Exchange POP3 Backend service runs on the Exchange 2013 computer that runs the mailbox server role. In the environment where the client accesses the server role and mailbox server role on the same computer, you need to manage these two services on the same computer.

When Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 is installed, IMAP4 client connectivity is not enabled. To enable IMAP4 client connectivity, you need to start two IMAP services, Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 services, and Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 Backend services. After IMAP4 is enabled, Exchange 2013 uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) to accept insecure IMAP4 client communication on ports 143 and 993.

The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service runs on the Exchange 2013 computer that runs the client access server role. The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 Backend service runs on the Exchange 2013 computer that runs the mailbox server role. You can manage these two services on the same computer when you run client access and mailbox roles on the same computer.

First, we set the Microsoft Exchange POP3 service to start automatically on CAS01 and start the POP3 service. CAS02 can follow the same steps, and IMAP can start the same way, start the POP3 frontend and IMAP4 frontend on the client access role server, and start the POP3 backend and IMAP4 backend on the mailbox server. Go to the Server Manager, find the POP front-end service, and change the startup type to automatic

After POP3 and IMAP4 are started in the front backend and the logon mode of the response is changed on the ECP Panel, we can receive and send emails through POP3 and IMAP4.
