Post-configuration tasks

After you complete a new Exchange 2013 installation, after you add additional Exchange 2013 server roles for an existing Exchange 2013 server, or after you install Exchange 2013 in an existing organization, you should consider post-installation tasks. Post-installation Tasks will help you verify the installation and configure the components you just installed.

Product Key

When you install Exchange 2013, your server will be licensed as a trial version. The trial version expires after 120 days from the date of installation. A server with a trial license will be used as an Exchange Standard Edition Server, but cannot enjoy Microsoft support services. If the trial version of the Exchange 2013 server has expired, Exchange also displays a separate warning for each expired server. If you want to continue to use Exchange 2013 on the server, you need to enter the product key before the trial version expires.

Permissions Configuration

In order to use the deployment assistant, you have granted some special permissions to your administrator account, which may not be required in the next operation. You should ensure that the account has only the necessary permissions to configure and manage the Exchange 2013 environment.

Role-based access control (RBAC) Permissions patterns are very flexible in Exchange 2013. The built-in role groups may be sufficient to manage most of your Exchange 2013 organizations. You can easily add or remove members to control permissions in an existing role group. The following topics provide more information to help you configure the appropriate permissions for completing Exchange 2013 tasks:

    • Permissions

    • Manage role Groups

    • Managing role Group members

    • Manage Role Assignment policies

    • Change the assignment policy for a mailbox

High availability options for mailbox servers

After at least two mailbox server deployments have been completed and verified for successful installation, you can configure mailbox servers and mailbox databases for high availability and site recovery. Exchange 2013 uses the concept of incremental deployment to configure high availability and site resilience for mailbox servers after the server deployment is complete. You can use features in Exchange 2013, such as database availability groups and database replicas, to implement service and data redundancy.

Hybrid deployment with Office 365

Hybrid deployments enable organizations to extend the rich experience and management control that comes with their existing on-premises Microsoft Exchange organizations to the cloud. Hybrid deployments provide a seamless look and feel for a single Exchange organization between your on-premises Exchange 2013 organization and Exchange Online in Microsoft Office 365. In addition, a hybrid deployment can act as an intermediate step to fully move to the Exchange Online organization. To configure a hybrid deployment, select Hybrid in the Exchange Server deployment assistant, answer the question, and complete the checklist steps.

Maintain and expand your Exchange organization

Now that you have Exchange 2013 installed, learn more about how to use Exchange to support your organization. For example, you can do the following:

    • Configure a mobile device policy so that users can access messages only from approved devices.

    • Add a remote domain to apply custom configuration and security to messages sent to or from a partner mail server.

    • Configure the backup and restore process to keep your data secure.

In addition to enabling features to increase productivity, you may also need to add servers so that you can deploy high-availability solutions, serve users in other regions, increase capacity, or meet all combinations of these or other goals. When installing additional servers, you need to consider issues such as Active Directory site design, load balancing client access servers, or message routing and transport high availability.

For more information, see the following topics:

Description

Active Directory

It is important to understand how Exchange 2013 uses Active Directory sites, and why having a good Active Directory site design is critical to ensuring that Exchange Server works correctly and efficiently.

Permissions

Smaller organizations can often manage Exchange with a single administrator account. However, you may want to authorize other administrators, or grant certain permissions to expert users, and so on. Read this topic to learn more about how to use Exchange to grant permissions to administrators, expert users, or how to grant users access to manage their own mailboxes.

Messaging Policy and Compliance

Depending on the laws of your country/region or the rules and regulations of your industry, you may need to archive or provide documentation for specific periods of time in response to a court order. Read this topic to learn how Exchange can help you respond to these requirements and requests.

Mail flow

While adding more Exchange 2013 servers, you need to be careful about scheduling message routing between different Active Directory sites, other messaging products, and servers in the Internet. Read this topic to learn more about how Exchange 2013 routes traffic, how to configure efficient and highly available message routing, and how to perform mail flow monitoring and diagnostics.

e-mail addresses and address books

The Global Address List (GAL) includes all recipients in the Exchange 2013 organization. Some organizations may not want each user to see all other recipients in the organization. You may also want some departments or business units to have a specific e-mail address field. Read this topic to learn more about how to split this GAL with Exchange 2013 so that users can see only the recipients you want them to see, how to automatically apply the correct e-mail addresses to recipients, how to configure the offline address book, and so on.

Client and mobile

Users no longer use only work computers to access their e-mail messages. They can also access e-mail using home computers, mobile devices, tablets, airport kiosks, and other means. It is important to understand how users access e-mail so that company information is secure. Read this topic to learn more about how Exchange maintains control of corporate information by applying policies to devices, specifying which methods users can use to access e-mail, and so on.

Mailbox and Client Access servers

Understanding the mailbox server and client Access server roles is critical for maintaining a healthy Exchange organization. Read the topics in this node to learn more about how these roles work, how to move mailboxes, manage mailbox databases, configure load Balancing, configure certificates, and more.

Manage high availability and site recovery

In the Exchange organization, data integrity and server availability are critical. You must ensure that the data stored in the Exchange server is secure, and that the availability of the Exchange Server can meet the requirements of your organization. Read this topic to learn more about how Exchange helps you achieve your goals by configuring database availability groups, establishing and testing backup and restore procedures, and more.

Public folders

Public folders are designed for shared access and provide an easy and effective way to collect, organize, and share information with other people in your workgroup or organization. You can use them as an archive for distribution groups, as a simple document sharing solution, and for other purposes.

To install Exchange 2013 by using the Setup Wizard

Other servers can increase capacity and enable you to configure features such as database availability groups. Read this topic to learn how to install additional Mailbox servers and client access servers.

Complete the Deployment checklist

Congratulations on successfully completing the checklist in the deployment Assistant!

Tools that you can use

The Microsoft Remote Connectivity Analyzer tool is a free WEB-based tool that can help you troubleshoot connectivity issues. This tool simulates multiple client sign-in and mail flow scenarios. Troubleshooting tips can help you correct problems when a test fails.
