Article title: experience in using wireless network interfaces in Ubuntu. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.

Wireless Internet access here refers to using GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, PHS, and other Internet access methods, rather than WLAN (802.11 ?). The level is limited. you can only describe the use process of several used devices for reference only.

I. prerequisites

Mobile Internet Access (GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA)
An important parameter for mobile Internet access is the access point (APN). mobile access points are divided into cmnet and cmwap. cmnet can directly access the network, and cmwap needs to access the network through the WAP gateway, the gateway can be understood as a proxy server. Currently, China Mobile's WAP gateway address is 10.0.0.172, which provides HTTP proxy protocol (port 80 and port 8080) and WAP gateway protocol (Port 9201 ). Similarly, China Unicom's access points correspond to uninet and uniwap, and China Unicom's network is compatible with mobile access points.
Cmwap is generally used for mobile phones, while cmnet is used for PCs. However, some mobile cards are blocked by cmwap, but cmnet charges by traffic. in this case, the PC can also access the Internet through cmwap, but you need to set the application gateway. for example, set the browser's proxy server to 10.0.0.172: 80.
We generally call a mobile phone GPRS to access the internet. the actual Mobile EDGE network is well covered and there is no big difference in use. the setting method is basically the same, and the 3G internet access will be the same in the future, it mainly depends on the network and terminal device support. From 2G to 3G, the speed of surfing the Internet is getting faster and faster. in the middle is 2.5G. GPRS is 2.5G, EDGE is 2.75G, UMTS is 3G, and HSDPA is called 3.5G.

PHS Internet access
PHS Internet access is divided into PIAFS and Packet modes. different speeds and Internet access modes are reflected in different dialing numbers with different suffixes:
32 k PIAFS #3
64 k PIAFS #4
32 k Packet #61
128 k Packet #64
If the access number is 16900 and 16900 K is used for Internet access, the access code is #64.
PHS generally requires the user name and password to access the internet. if you are not clear about it, you need to consult the service provider.

II. Huawei E630

The Huawei E630 is a PCMCIA network card that supports no internet access from GSM dial-up to HSDPA, from 2G to 3G. Ubuntu 8.10 supports this network interface card. you can identify the hardware after inserting it, but it is recognized as E620.

Add a "mobile broadband" connection:

Select Carrier:

However, if you select China Unicom and the wizard does not configure the correct APN, you need to manually set the APN to uninet. Because China Unicom's APN is compatible with China Mobile, you can select China Mobile as the carrier. When you select China Mobile, the default APN value is cmnet. do not forget to change the value of the cmwap cap.

After you confirm to save it, you can connect to "mobile broadband" at any time (it is still very advanced, and only 3G networks can calculate mobile broadband ):

However, after the connection is successful, the default gateway of the Lan is not replaced, and the option similar to replacedefaultroute is not found in the configuration. the configuration file does not know where it is. However, as long as there is no Gateway in the LAN connection, or you can stop it, you can use wireless Internet access. For versions earlier than Ubuntu 8.10, you can configure and use pppconfig, kppp, or wvdial.
If you use cmwap to access the Internet, you may need to set the proxy server of the browser to 10.0.0.172: 80.
