Interview object: Facebook.com President Mark. Zuk, 23 years old.
Q: Facebook.com has experienced rapid growth and is now registering up to 150,000 people a day, 3 times times higher than the competitor MySpace. How did you do that?
A: We are also surprised by this. In the beginning, we adjusted the registration system to apply only to students at school, initially only Harvard University can use. Subsequently, we migrated the registration system to Off-campus and began entering other universities and secondary schools. Now, everyone can be a registered user. The growth rate is staggering.
Q: Is facebook.com popular because of the authenticity of the information on the website?
A: Our requirements for authenticity are very strict. Our principle is that people must have real connections in their lives. This is the biggest difference between facebook.com and other dating sites.
Q: Why do you think facebook.com is more like a social tool than a social network?
A: I think there's a lot of uncertainty about social networking. Many companies that advertise themselves as social networks have different goals. Some provide the commercial network function, some provide the media entrance function. What we are committed to is to provide people with a more effective means of communication, and to gain and share information. We have been emphasizing the usefulness of our tools.
Q: What do you think about the development of the company's business?
A: For the first time, we allow facebook.com people to go to the website for the development of Software engineering, which is a new breakthrough for us. Many companies are starting to produce software that facebook.com platforms can use. This is also exciting for our users because it means they can enjoy more service functionality when using our platform.
Q: What are your big plans for the company's future? In the next 3-5 years, how will the company develop?
A: Looking ahead is not an easy thing, and our way forward is still far away. Now that we have 30 million users, there will be more and more. I hope that the next in the way to attract users more diverse, our network communication can be more perfect.
Q: 3 years ago you were a student and created a facebook.com in a Harvard student dormitory. And today you are a full-time entrepreneur, what is your daily life like?
A: Every morning after getting up, I will walk to the company to go to work. At work I will meet different people and discuss work with my colleagues. I just sleep when I get home from work and I don't even have an alarm clock.
Q: You are a 23-year-old Silicon Valley president, how do you deal with the stress that you encounter during the rapid development of your website?
A: I've seen a visit to Steve Jobs, and I remember him saying: "If you do this kind of work and you're in this position, you have to really, really like the job, otherwise it's meaningless." If you don't take the job seriously, or if you don't like it at all, you're going to have a hard time, even at work because you're too busy to go crazy.
For me, it's a pleasure. I work with a group of like-minded friends who have different backgrounds, work in different ways, and create a common thing. People have been speculating about whether we want to sell the company, what exactly do we want to do? What exactly is our business strategy? But for me and my colleagues, the focus of our attention will never be this, but how to do our facebook.com well.
