Favorites: how to effectively create WBS

Since there is no WBS, it becomes the core of the project manager to manage the project without project management. Every company with mature project management has a certain WBS template for different types of projects for the project manager's reference. For complex and large projects, the WBS production process recommended by IBM is as follows:

1. Create a work product list (PL ). Working product is the work result to be output by the project. It can be an integral part of the final delivery result of the project or the output result of the intermediate process of the project. Taking software development as an example, the user management module in the software is part of the most software products. The requirement analysis documents of the software are files in the soft bed process and work products of the software development project. Work products have large, small, some are interrelated, and are affiliated with each other. The process of listing work products can be brainstorming, and the project team should work together.

2. Formulate the work product decomposition structure (PBS ). There are a lot of work products listed in large and small projects, and there are hundreds and thousands of large projects. Work the properties and relationships of these work products, organize these work products in a structured way, form a top-down, step-by-step breakdown of work product structure (PBS: product breakdown structure ). This is the product material table (BOM) in the manufacturing industry, which shows how many parts a product has.

3. Create a Job breakdown structure (WBS ). With PBS, as long as the task of obtaining the work product is clear, the WBS can be obtained according to the structure of PBS. Note that the same PBS can be used with different WBS, because the tasks for obtaining the same work product can be different. For example, the user management module in software development is a work product in PBS. For WBS, it can be a different task. One is to purchase a user management module, A project team can develop a user management module.

4. Create an organizational breakdown (OBS ). The task in WBS is determined, and the owner of the completed task can be clarified. Therefore, WBS can form an organizational Breakdown Structure of the entire project. Those who complete the project tasks, get the work product, and complete the project.

The key is the decomposition structure. PBS, WBS, and OBS are in the same structure, but they are described from different perspectives. Component decomposition methods and process decomposition methods are commonly used for this structure. A typical component method is to split a complete product into parts in the manufacturing industry step by step. A typical process decomposition method can be a process from requirement to design, coding, and testing of software development. In project decomposition, these two methods are often used in turn, and ultimately the project is divided into specific and small work tasks.

Structured is another feature of WBS. It is used to manage tasks.
