Fifty-eight, NT Server used as the Internet gateway

--- Assume that you are a network administrator and are responsible for the NT network environment of a small enterprise. Today, Internet access has become a trend, you may encounter the problem of connecting your Intranet to the Internet. This article provides a solution for establishing local communication and Internet routing.

--- Computers running NT Server 4.0 can be used not only as LAN/LAN routers, but also as Internet gateways. The only thing you need now is a telephone line, a Modem, and a PPP account provided by an ISP. All you need to do is Configure the server. To configure the server, follow these steps:

1. Install the Modem on the NT Server and connect to the telephone line

--- Start NT Server 4.0 and click Setting in the Start menu to open the Control Panel. Double-click the Modem icon to display the Install New Modem Wizard. At this time, the user has two options: one is to manually set the Modem, the other is to let the NT search for one. Because automatic search takes a certain amount of time and the results are sometimes inaccurate, it is recommended that you manually set the Modem. Check Don't Detect... and then click Next. In this case, you will see the Install New Modem window, insert the drive disk of the modem, enter the path to the disk, and click Next, NT searches the disk for a modem driver compatible with NT and displays a list of drivers it finds. Highlight the driver you want to install and click OK to install the driver. In the Next window, select the Modem connection port and click Next. The last screen is displayed. Click Finish to complete the installation. After installation, you must set the port speed and so on.

2. Check the original static IP address of the NIC and discard the default gateway.

--- Open the Control Panel, double-click the Network icon, and the Network attribute worksheet is displayed. Double-click the TCP/IP Protocol table to open the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties window. Check the Default Gateway column. Do not enter any IP addresses.

Iii. Install RAS

--- Open Control Panel, double-click the Network icon, select the Service Properties tab, open the Service Properties worksheet, click Add, and a pull list is displayed, listing the software services that can be added to Windows NT. Select the Remote Access Service item and click the Continue button. The Remote Access Setup window appears after the RAS file is copied to the hard disk. You need to set the Comport and click the Configure button, select 1 in the Port Usage column. dial out only; 2. receive CILS only; 3. after selecting 3 Dial out and Receive CILS, click OK to return to the Remote Access Setup window. After clicking Continue, the RAS Server TCP/IP Configuration window appears, check Use DHCP to assign remote TCP/IP Client address and click OK to restart the computer to complete the installation of RAS.

4. Establish a connection with the ISP and disable Use remote gateway in the connection

--- Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop and double-click the Dial-Up Networking item. The Dial-Up Networking dialog box is displayed, showing the New Phonebook Entry Wizard, enter the Name you want to edit in the Name the new phonebook entry field. Generally, for convenience, I use the ISP IP address. Click Next and the Dial-Up Networking dialog box appears. The dialog box displays the following items:

. Phonebook Entry to Dial
. Phone number preview
. Dialing from

--- You will see the edited name in the Phonebook Entry to Dial column, the Phone number you want to Dial in the Phone number preview column, and click the More button to display a menu, select Edit entry and modem properties, click, and the Edit Phonebook Entry window appears. click in the Server column. The Network protocol column appears. Check TCP/IP protocol, and click TCP/IP Settings... the PPP TCP/IP Settings window appears. Check Server assign IP address and Specify name server address. Do not check Use default gateway on the network. Remember! Enter the IP address corresponding to the ISP in the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS columns, click OK, and return to the Edit Phonebook Entry window. After clicking the Script button, select Pop up a terminal Window in the After dialing (login) column and click OK to return to the Dial-Up Networking Window. Click Close to Close the Window and return to the desktop.

5. Modify the Registry)

--- In the registry, run the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Service \ RASArp \ Parameters key to generate a New DWORD Value Disable OtherScrPackets with a value of 0. Note: When an IP group is transferred, the vro no longer changes the source IP address.

6. Dial to the ISP and find the IP address assigned by the ISP after logon.

7. Add a route

--- Enter route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 w. x. y. z metric2 in the command status.

--- W. x. y. z indicates the IP address allocated by the newly found ISP.

8. Start the workstation and modify the Default gateway address hotspot Network

--- The Default gateway address on the workstation is the static IP address of the server Nic. At this time, your workstation can Ping the external world and connect the Intranet to the Internet.
