There must be an address error.

File_exists and is_file should not be used for URL files
If only the detection image exists, you can write this:
$url = @getimagesize ($path);

if (!is_array ($url))
{
Echo ' The image doesn\ ' t exist ';
}
else {
Echo ' the image exists ';
}

You can use Curl to check all types of files.
