When Microsoft developed a new JavaScript Engine for ie9, Mozilla was doing the same thing for Firefox 4.0. The development code of ie9 is Chakra. Judging from the three recently released versions, ie9's WebKit sunspider JavaScript test scores have been steadily improving. Undoubtedly, the goal of ie9 is to become the fastest browser in the world.
By publishing Platform Preview 3 build 1.9.7.8.74.6000, ie9 has reduced sunspider scores to less than 100 milliseconds, narrowing the gap with opera 10.6 and chrome 6.0. However, Microsoft stressed that ie9 has not made any special improvements to the sunspider test. In late June, Microsoft conducted a sunspider test on mainstream browsers. The results show that opera and chrome are still the fastest browsers, but Firefox 4.0 preview version is slower than ie9.
Generally, users think that Firefox has better performance than IE, but the development has changed. Now Firefox 4.0 is catching up with ie9. Therefore, Mozilla has to develop a new JavaScript Engine to replace the existing tracemonkey engine.
Mozilla developer David Anderson said: "In July 12, jägermonkey's V8 test scores surpassed the tracemonkey engine. Although the increase is not significant, I will continue to improve jägermonkey. We plan to release the jägermonkey engine in March ."
It is reported that in September 1, The jägermonkey engine will be integrated into the Firefox 4.0 browser.
