10 Adjustments make Ubuntu feel at home

Not long ago, I provided you with 12 small suggestions for adjusting Ubuntu. However, it was a time ago. Now we have made another 10 suggestions to make Ubuntu feel at home.

These 10 suggestions are very simple and convenient to execute. Let's get started!

Download, install, and configure Ubuntu 14.04

1. Install TLP

We recently introduced TLP, a software optimized for power supply settings that allows you to enjoy a longer battery life. We have discussed TLP in depth before, and we also mentioned this software in the list. To install it, run the following command on the terminal:

  1. Sudo add-apt-repository-y ppa: linrunner/tlp & sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get install-y tlp-rdw tp-smapi-dkms acpi-call-tools & sudo tlp start

The above command will add the necessary warehouse, update the package list so that it can contain the package provided by the new warehouse, install TLP and enable this service.

2. system load indicator

Add a system load indicator to your Ubuntu Desktop to help you quickly understand your system resource usage. If you don't want to add this technical chart on the desktop, do not add it. But for those interested in it, this extension is really good. You can run this command to install it:

  1. Sudo apt-get install indicator-multiload

Find it in Dash and open it.

3. Weather indicator

Ubuntu provided built-in weather indicators in the past, but since it switched to Gnome 3, it was no longer provided by default. You need to install an independent indicator instead. You can run the following command to install it:

  1. Sudo add-apt-repository-y ppa: atareao/atareao & sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get install-y my-weather-indicator

This will add another repository, update the package list, and install this indicator. Then find and enable it in Dash.

4. Install Dropbox or other cloud storage solutions

A software I installed in all my Linux systems is Dropbox. Without it, I can't find my home feeling, mainly because all my frequently used files are stored in Dropbox. Installing Dropbox is straightforward, but it takes some time to execute a simple command. Before you start, to view the Dropbox icon in the system tray, run the following command:

  1. Sudo apt-get install libappindicator1

Then you need to go to the Dropbox download page and install the. deb file you have downloaded. Your Dropbox should be running now.

If you hate Dropbox a bit, you can also try to use Copy or OneDrive. The two provide more free storage space, which is a big reason to consider using them. Compared with OneDrive, I recommend using Copy because Copy can work on all Linux distributions.

5. Install Pidgin and Skype

Keep in touch with friends, and if you use instant messaging, you are lucky. Both Pidgin and Skype are excellent in Linux and can connect to all major networks. Installing Pidgin is as simple as running this command:

  1. Sudo apt-get install pidgin

Installing Skype is also easy-you just need to go to the Skype download page and download the. deb file of your Ubuntu12.04 architecture.
