10 free Open source Windows tools on GitHub

GitHub is now the central repository for all open source things, a site that recently released a status report called "Octoverse" detailing its range of highlights from last year, including the total number of active users, the most common emoji expressions, the most commonly used programming languages, and so on.

and what is most surprising about it? Microsoft has always been a top contributor-beating Facebook, Google, Atom, and NPM in the spotlight.

I think it's amazing how quickly Microsoft can change its mind and embrace open source. It all started with the open source of the. NET framework, and although it was thought to be affair, Microsoft was still sticking with it and recently opened up Live Writer, so the new shift looks serious.

We are happy to see this and applaud some of the most frequently used Windows software for free access to GitHub. Here are some of the software we found.

1. Visual Studio Code

Frankly, I have so much to say about the benefits of VS code, so I'm going to summarize: it's beautiful, it works, and it works (cross-platform). It still lacks some detail functionality, but if it gives it 6-12 months of time, I believe it can grab atom and Sublime Text on the throne.

2. Focuswriter

If you're working on some kind of writing-fiction, blogs, documents-you definitely want to meet Focuswriter. It has been released for nearly a decade, but has been one of our favorite non-distracting writing applications. If you want to complete your writing, this app is helpful.

My favorites are features such as theme switching, daily progress tracking, timers and alarms, and a tabbed interface (so you can open multiple documents at the same time).

3. Haroopad

The Good markdown Editor is hard to find, so when I first discovered Haroopad I was almost ecstatic. If you're still looking, you can stop-if you haven't started learning markdown, maybe it's time for you to start. It is a great benefit for improving productivity.

One drawback is that you can't export doc, RTF, PDF, or other document formats, but it can export HTML (both simple HTML and styled HTML). Another disadvantage is that you need to edit the text file when changing fonts and styles Two is not simple from the menu inside the selection.

4. Cherrytree

I'm not using cherrytree as often as I used to (believe that once you've used OneNote, you'll never be able to go back to using other software), but it's undeniable that I've been using Cherrytree for years. Simply put, this is a wiki-like application that allows you to manage your notes better through a page link.

Although the page is a bit rough, the page supports rich text editing, and the search function is very advanced (such as: You can search on a note page, you can search on the sub-page, even search the entire note, etc.), if you feel that using OneNote or Evernote is too big, I highly recommend that you use it.

5. Greenshot

There are many ways to make a screen on the Windows platform (many ways to take a screenshot in Windows), including the built-in fragment tool app. I've tried many of these apps and other options available, but my favorite one is greenshot.

The greenshot is included in the system tray. You can use different hotkey shortcuts to make the screen, including capturing the screen, capturing some areas, capturing the window. You can also customize the output format, toggle the cursor, and so on. Very fast and effective.

6. OBS Studio

I strongly recommend Obs Studio if you need to record a screen (for example, to create instructional videos). It is completely free, development active, set up and functional, and does not take up a lot of system resources without any reason.

OBS Studio is actually designed for network streaming video, but all you need to do is set the recording mode. If you still don't like it for some reason, you can try these alternatives and try these options.

7. Handbrake

Handbrake is a format conversion tool that can convert any video file to any other video format. It can handle dozens of outputs, support batch conversions, and even use DVDs and Blu-ray as the source input (non-DRM only). Do you need to add chapter markers, captions, or video filters? It can do.

I like handbrake the following two aspects: first, although 100% free, but with commercial-grade program performance and efficiency; second, it has the ease of use, the interface is simple and direct. This is an essential app for anyone who needs to create or download a lot of video.

8. Elpis

Although Pandora has already provided a desktop application, a paid Pandora account is also required for use. If you like Pandora, but don't like using the Web player, you might prefer apps that can be played on your phone.

No, now you can switch to Elpis, which is a completely free software that doesn't require Pandora's account to hear Pandora's music, although its interface is ugly, but it doesn't matter, it's enough for you to use.

9. VLC Media Player

VLC multimedia player does not need to be introduced, it often appears on the internet in every "Windows Best multimedia Player" article, I believe anyone who can access the Internet has heard of this app. To my surprise, it was on GitHub!

If you are unsure if VLC is right for you, read the following article: The little-known VLC secret and the very useful VLC feature. These are enough to explain why VLC has been one of the world's most popular multimedia players for years.

Ten. Calibre

Whether you're reading an ebook on a kindel e-reader or tablet, cell phone, or even desktop or laptop, you'll need Calibre. It's a bloated name (with too many useless features), but its core features are unparalleled. If you want to tidy up and read the ebook, Calibre will call it a hand.

For the first time, the confusing interface may make you feel a little difficult, so we suggest you read this complete guide to using Calibre to process ebooks. This should be enough to get you started and enjoy the app.
