2018 key year for edge data centers !, 2018 data center
From 2017 to 2018, the emergence and development of new technologies such as IOT, AI, and 5G have been promoting a new round of data center transformation. The energy consumption of data centers is also an urgent problem in the industry. However, with the mature development of technology, 2018 will become the development year of edge data centers.
The so-called Edge Data Center refers to the direct provision of good services to users in the closest place to users. The wide area network bandwidth is very limited and crowded. These edge data centers only maintain real-time data updates through the wide area network and core data centers, which not only avoids the transmission of a lot of duplicate data, in addition, the services obtained by local users are not different from those obtained by accessing the core data center, and the experience is better.
So what kind of data center can be called an edge Data Center? First, edge data centers can provide a vast majority of services to local users, so that local users do not have to access remote data centers. Second, Edge Data Centers meet the needs of high-bandwidth access applications, it provides users with a high-speed access experience, especially for applications with extremely high access traffic. Furthermore, edge data centers have a cost advantage. On the surface, many data centers need to be built, but in fact, the scale of these edge data centers cannot be compared with that of the core data centers.
Edge Data Center technology is not complex and easy to maintain. It is usually possible to remotely maintain the data center at the Headquarters. Remote Management of the data center usually requires very few professional technicians to complete the maintenance. If it is to build a large core data center, because the system is too complex, it requires a lot of professional technical personnel, and once a problem occurs, the system is too complex, it is often difficult to find the root cause of the problem; in addition, the most important thing is that renting a carrier's wide area network bandwidth is very expensive, and the operator will not allow any data center to obtain unlimited bandwidth, if the data center transmits user access traffic through the WAN, a lot of data here is duplicated, it will be a waste. Building an edge data center can save the cost of renting Wan bandwidth and save a lot of money for the data center. Finally, the edge data center is more secure, there is a certain security interval between it and the core data center. From the perspective of an edge data center alone, security is indeed not defensive, but because the edge data center is not large in size, the impact of attacks is also small, and even paralysis will not affect the overall business. You can also switch between data centers in a timely manner to ensure normal business. Therefore, in general, edge data centers are more secure.
At present, the development of edge data centers has become increasingly fierce. Its development does not replace traditional cloud computing, but aims to supplement the data center and cloud computing and play a role in the distributed expansion of campus networks, cellular networks, data center networks, or cloud services. According to Gartner's chief research analyst Santhosh Rao, "Currently, some enterprises that have begun digital commercialization have realized that they need to adopt a more decentralized approach to meet the requirements of the digital business infrastructure. As the data volume and transmission speed increase, if all the information flows are transmitted to the cloud service or data center for processing, the efficiency is too low ." It believes that only 10% of enterprises use traditional centralized data centers or edge modes outside of cloud services to create and process data, but this proportion will reach 2022 by 50%.
According to the domestic situation, all three major operators have their own plans, and the demand for edge data centers is booming. Specifically, China Telecom and China Unicom had a lot of fixed-line services in the early days, but many devices have been dequeued and there are a lot of idle resources in the data center. Therefore, the two companies will promote the transformation of Edge Data Centers and traditional data centers from the perspective of data center resource utilization. For mobile, equipment usage is also relatively high when there are many data centers. Therefore, traditional data centers may be transformed during edge data center research, it is more out of consideration for future business development.
China Unicom
Currently, China Unicom released the "China Unicom Edge-Cloud Platform Architecture and Industrial Ecosystem White Paper" in February 27 this year. it announced the official launch of Edge-Cloud scale pilots and planning and construction of thousands of Edge Data Centers in 15 provinces and cities nationwide. Edge-Cloud can meet users' demand for low-latency, high-bandwidth, and localized business experience, improve network usage efficiency, and promote new business models.
China Telecom
China Telecom said it has joined Intel in promoting the sinking of core network capabilities based on the NFV architecture to build edge data centers and deploy them on a new generation of terminal bureaus as an important breakthrough in network transformation. With the help of NFV and MEC technologies, the CDN network is cloudified and sunk to edge nodes close to the end user side, and deployed to the Edge Data Center in the Next Generation Terminal Bureau, it can ensure the elasticity and maximum utilization of resources, effectively relieve the network pressure to a certain extent, and provide users with a better experience.
In the future, more tests and verifications will be carried out for edge computing, and edge computing will become an important choice for domestic and foreign communication service providers for network transformation. According to IDC statistics, more than 2020 of terminals and devices will be connected by 50 billion. In the future, more than 50% of data needs to be analyzed, processed, and stored on the edge of the network, edge computing faces a huge market scale. More importantly, distributed edge data centers allow organizations and teams to better address and manage their digital business infrastructure. In 2018, the number and speed of data will increase to a very high level. This is really an important year for edge data centers!
