If the computer has 1G or more of memory, and the operating system is WIN95/98, Windows will not start, and when you restart, you will see the following error message:
Insufficient memory to initialize Windows.
Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG. SYS and AUTOEXEC. BAT files, and restart your computer.
This behavior can also occur when Windows is installed or when Windows is first started, to resolve this issue, you must add the following in the [386enh] section of the System.ini file:
maxphyspage=30000
This limits the memory that Windows can use to 768 MB. The following are the steps:
1. Edit the System.ini file with any text editing software (such as Notepad).
2. Add the following in the [386enh] section:
3. maxphyspage=30000
4. Save and restart the computer.
If this problem occurs in Windows installation, follow these steps:
1. Restart the computer and when you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press F8 and select "Command Prompt only" from the boot menu. For Windows 98, after restarting, hold down the CTRL key until the boot menu appears, and then select Command Prompt only.
2. Point the current directory to the directory where you want to install Windows.
3. Edit the System.ini file, type "edit System.ini" and enter.
4. Add the following in the [386enh] section:
5. maxphyspage=30000
6. Save, restart your computer, and the Windows installation will continue.
If you do not develop under 98, we recommend the use of virtual machines, it is said that Microsoft recommends 98 do not exceed 512M of memory.
