Acronym and abbr

Sometimes, to facilitate reading or memorizing, for example, if a sentence is too long, we will shorten it. Or a simple sentence, or a special shortening, such as taking the first letter.

How can we identify these acronyms in HTML? Generally, we will use two tags: Acronym and abbr.

Acronym is defined as the first letter abbreviation, and abbr defines an abbreviation.

At present, some advanced browsers, such as ff and OP, will display the content of the two tags in a special way and add the dotted line on their own.

The abbreviation is for the convenience of memorizing and reading, but it is not good for us to understand the content. Therefore, when using these two tags, we also need to combine the tag attribute title to describe the omitted content in detail, so as to achieve both memory, reading and understanding. Here are several examples:

Abbreviation:

<Acronym Title = "World Wide Web"> WWW </acronym>

<Acronym Title = "Cascading Style Sheets"> CSS </acronym>

Common abbreviations:

<Abbr Title = "etce.pdf"> etc. </abbr>

<Abbr Title = "People's Republic of China"> China </abbr>

I personally think that abbr should include acronym, because acronym is only used to take the first letter, which is a special form of abbreviation. abbr is used to define an abbreviation and has a larger scope.

That is to say

<Abbr Title = "People's Republic of China"> China </abbr>

Cannot be written

<Acronym Title = "People's Republic of China"> China </acronym>

While

<Acronym Title = "hypertext markup language"> HTML </acronym>

It can be written

<Abbr Title = "hypertext markup language"> HTML </abbr>

In the next HTML5, it seems that abbr will replace acronym.
