ArcGIS set up a connection to Oracle

Set up connectivity to Oracle Geodatabase» Manage Geodatabases in Geodatabase»oracle

To establish a connection from a client computer to an Oracle database, you must install the Oracle client application on the client computer. Also, make sure that the version of the Oracle client application you are installing is compatible with the version of the database that you are connecting to.

Note:

If you are connecting from a 32-bit ArcGIS client, you must install a 32-bit Oracle client. This is true even if the ArcGIS client application is installed on a single 64-bit operating system (OS) computer and the database and server OS are 64-bit. If you are connecting from a 64-bit ArcGIS client, you must install a 64-bit Oracle client. If you are connecting from a 64-bit ArcGIS client, install the 64-bit Oracle client.

If you have a copy of the Oracle client installation files on your site, follow the instructions in the Oracle documentation to run the replica to install the Oracle Instant, runtime, or Administrator client on the client computer.

If you do not have a complete copy of the client installation files, you can download the Oracle Instant client from the ESRI Customer Care portal site and place it on an ArcGIS client computer. Follow these steps to set up an Oracle Instant Client that is used in conjunction with ArcGIS:

2. Download the Oracle Instant Client:linux (32-bit), Linux (64-bit), Windows (32-bit), or Windows (64-bit) corresponding to the ArcGIS client operating system.

   You can download compressed files or RPMs that contain client files.

4. Log on to the client computer as the user who installed the ArcGIS software.
6. Unzip the downloaded file to a directory on the client computer, or run the RPM.
   • In Linux, this directory is granted at least the following permissions: Grant read-write and Execute permissions to all, grant reading and Execute permissions to groups, and grant Read and Execute permissions (drwxr-xr-x) to other connected users.
   • In Windows, grant Full Control permissions to the directory owner.
8. Set the operating system's environment variable or user profile to add the path and name of the directory where the Oracle Instant Client is placed or installed.
   • On Linux, set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable.
   • On Windows, set the PATH environment variable. If you have both ArcGIS for Server and ArcGIS for Desktop installed on the same Windows computer , set the PATH variable to read the 64-bit client first, and then read the 32-bit client. For example, if the 32-bit Oracle Instant client is installed under C:\Program Files (x86) \oracle, 64-bit Oracle Instant client is installed in C:\Program Files\oracl E, add the following to the start of the PATH variable on Windows:C:\Program files\oracle; C:\Program Files (x86) \oracle;.
10. If you have already run an ArcGIS client, restart it to identify new files and environment variables.
12. Test the connection by adding a database connection to ArcGIS for Desktop.

If you are connecting to a database through a non-ArcGIS client application, you may also need toadd an entry in the Tnsnames.ora file (Oracle x) or Extproc.ora file (Oracle oneG) to Connect to the Oracle DBMS and set the appropriate environment variables, such as Orahome and PATH.
