System Center 2012 Configuration Manager is a member of the Microsoft system center management solution suite, you can increase it efficiency and productivity by reducing manual tasks, allowing you to focus on high-value projects, and maximizing the use of hardware and software investments, and improve the productivity of end users by providing the right software at the right time. Configuration Manager enables secure and scalable software deployment, compliance settings management, and comprehensive asset management for servers, desktops, laptops, and mobile devices, this helps you provide more efficient IT services.

Configuration Manager deployment consists of a site hierarchy or an independent site. The hierarchy includes multiple sites. Each site has one or more site system servers. An independent site also includes one or more site system servers.

* Starting from system center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1, you can install a new management center site as the parent site of an existing independent master site. This will expand your independent primary site to a larger level that supports additional new primary site installation

Site:

Central Administration site

The management center site is suitable for large-scale deployment and supports centralized management and flexible support for devices distributed in the global network infrastructure.

Recommended positions for all management and reports of hierarchies.

  • SQL Server is required.

  • Does not process client data.

  • Client allocation is not supported.

  • Not all site system roles are available.

  • Participate in database replication.

Primary Site primary site

The primary site is suitable for small deployments and has fewer options to adapt to any future growth of the enterprise.

Required site for managing clients in a well-connected network. All clients are assigned to the primary site.

If the management center site is not installed, the first site you install is an independent primary site. By default, you cannot install other main sites that can communicate with each other.

  • SQL Server is required.

  • Other main sites provide support for more clients.

  • It cannot be layered under other primary sites.

  • Participate in database replication.

Secondary site

The secondary site expands the primary site to manage devices that are connected to the primary site through a slow network.

Manage the client in a remote location where the network bandwidth needs to be controlled.

  • A complete instance of QL Server express or SQL server is required. If any item is not installed at the site, SQL Server Express is automatically installed.

  • Management points and distribution points are automatically deployed when the site is installed.

  • The secondary site must be a direct sub-site under the primary site, but can be configured to send content to other secondary sites.

  • Participate in database replication.

For more information about hierarchies and sites, see planning sites and hierarchies in Configuration Manager.

Site System server and site system role:

Site System role Description
Site Server A computer that runs the Configuration Manager installer and provides core site functions.
Site Database Server The server that hosts the SQL Server database. It stores information about Configuration Manager assets and site data.
Component Server The server that runs the Configuration Manager service. When you install all site system roles except the distribution point role, Configuration Manager Automatically installs the component server.
Management point (MP) A site system role that provides policy and service location information to the client and receives configuration data from the client.
Distribution point (DP) A site system role that contains source files for client download, such as application content, software packages, software updates, operating system images, and startup images.
Reporting Services A site system role integrated with SQL Server reporting services to create and manage reports for Configuration Manager.
