Broadband Router FAQs

With the advent of the Internet era, there are already a large number of users of broadband routers. So I have studied the solutions to common problems of broadband routers. I would like to share with you here and hope they will be useful to you. Broadband routers are now very popular, and the overall configuration is becoming easier and easier. Generally, a single ADSL line can only support Internet access from one computer. However, after using a Broadband Router, an ADSL line can support Internet access from multiple computers. A Broadband Router uses NAT technology to route input and output data packets.

All external users can only see the public IP of the broadband exchange router, but cannot reach the LAN computer. The local network computer is protected by the natural firewall of the broadband exchange router. However, after the configuration is complete, users will find that there are many problems when surfing the Internet, such as unstable connection speed or failure to transfer files on QQ. Have you ever encountered similar troubles? The following describes some common troubles.

Trouble 1: Unable to connect

A common problem for new users is that they cannot connect to the Internet, especially those who use DHCP to directly obtain IP addresses. Before connecting to a vromodem, you must copy the MAC address of the NIC and release the IP address. Then, connect the computer to the LAN connection port of the vro, but do not connect the vromodem to the Modem or ISP ). Next, copy the MAC address of the computer to the vro, store the settings, and connect the network cable provided by the ISP to the vro. Because the IP address is released and then connected to the vro, the IP address may not be available, so copy the MAC address to the router first ). However, if the above method still cannot obtain the IP address, you must call the ISP to release the IP address. In Windows 2000/XP, press "Start> Run" and enter "cmd/k ipconfig/all". "Physical Address" is the MAC Address.

Headache 2: slow Internet access

Users who use DHCP to directly obtain IP addresses may be unable to obtain IP addresses. Users who use PPPoE to dial up the Internet may encounter unstable Internet access speeds, there is no inevitable solution to this problem. You can try the following methods.

Method 1: manually set the Proxy Server

If you are a Broadband User, you may find that you cannot browse some web pages after using the Broadband Router. One of the reasons is that some ISP providers use the invisible proxy server in the background, make some webpages unavailable. If you cannot refresh the webpage by pressing the F5 key multiple times, you can manually set the proxy server. The method is to go to the browser's "Tools → INTERNET Options → connection → LAN Settings", and finally select to use the proxy server and enter the URL proxy.abc.com) and the connection port 8080.

Method 2: Change the mtu value of the vro

When a computer connects to a network to transmit data, the data is divided into packets of different sizes, while the MTU value Maximum Transmission Unit) is the value that defines the packet size. The larger the MTU value, the larger the packet. Theoretically, the transmission rate can be increased, but the MTU value cannot be too large. Because the packet size is too large, the chance of errors during transmission increases greatly. Generally, the maximum MTU value for PPPoE connection is 1492 by default, while that for Ethernet is 1500. If the problem of slow access speed cannot be solved by manually setting the proxy server, you can try to gradually lower the MTU value of PPPoE until the connection is most stable.

Method 3: Change the MTU value of the NIC

In addition to some routers, you can change the mtu value of the PPPoE connection. The MTU value of the NIC can also be changed. However, you need to change the value in the logon file if necessary, do not change the default MTU value ). In addition, the locations of "Registry" in different Windows versions are different, for example, in Windows 98, the MTU value is changed to "HKEY_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Class/NetTrans/000n", where "n" is a number, if multiple communication protocols are installed on the computer, projects such as "0001", "0002", and "0003" may appear. If you open the project, the "DriverDesc" is "TCP/IP", that is, the "Registry" setting of the NIC. You can right-click here to add a "MaxMTU" DWORD Value, modify the value in decimal format) to change the MTU value.
