From the very beginning, Java provided a cross-platform window GUI library, from AWT, swing to the current SWT and jface. The initial toolkit was weak, but the subsequent development kit improved the shortcomings of the previous toolkit and made great progress. SWT and jface not only make Java a viable choice for building desktop applications, but also make it an advantageous development platform. Although the past attempts to get a lightweight and powerful java system will inevitably mean accepting its lack of GUI, this defect does not exist now, and Java can finally have a place in desktop applications.

The next chapter will introduce eclipse that generates SWT and jface, as well as the necessary preparations for building SWT and jface programs.
