Brief introduction

This article introduces you to IBM operational Decision Manager V8 on IBM pureapplication System. Here you will learn how to use the Graphics Wizard to deploy the ODM mode on Pureapplication System and create a different environment. Once the deployment is complete, you can create the instance you want within a few hours. The developer can then access and use the ODM environment as usual, including using related tools such as Rule Execution Server console, Decision Center, and Event administration console. You can even integrate IBM Business Process Manager (BPM) into the cloud.

This article describes how to:

Note: As of this writing, IBM Pureapplication System supports IBM operational Decision Manager V8 only on 64-bit Red Hat Linux.

Pureapplication System Basics

The following content is intended for readers who have not read related articles to deploy BPM patterns on IBM pureapplication System.

IBM pureapplication System provides a way to virtualize, distribute, optimize, and monitor software applications in the cloud. The pureapplication system is provided as an integrated system, preloaded with virtual images and patterns that can be used as is or used as a template for customizing virtual images and schemas. The Pureapplication System is also responsible for placement and management of the middleware environment, such as WebSphere application Server or IBM Business process Manager in the cloud, in the area of platform-service (PaaS) (IBM BPM).

In this article, you will learn how to load an image of the IBM ODM hypervisor into the pureapplication System (usually the rack) and how to use the prebuilt mode.

The patterns in this context are a logical illustration of the physical and virtual assets that make up a particular solution. Pureapplication system has both virtual Application mode and virtual system mode, which are often referred to as VAPP and Vsys modes respectively.

The Vsys mode offers the greatest flexibility and two types of customization options. The Vsys mode includes an operating system and may include other IBM software solutions, such as WebSphere application Server or IBM ODM.

The VAPP mode is highly optimized and constructed to support a single workload. The features and functionality of the integrated software are limited to those necessary features and functionality. This pattern requires the least amount of customization in the deployment process, providing the most direct way to get a quick return on investment.

For more information about the Vsys and VAPP modes, see the DeveloperWorks article leverages virtual system mode to manage topologies. For a description of the different types of schemas supported by Pureapplication System, and how to decide which schema to use, see developerWorks article Prepare for IBM pureapplication system, part 2nd: Is your application ready for virtualization?

The only mode currently supported by the IBM ODM is the virtual system mode, so we will focus on this pattern.

The pureapplication system has only one graphical user interface, comprising two consoles: System Console and Workload console, as shown in Figure 1. System Console is typically used by systems administrators to configure cloud and IP groups, as well as other system-related activities. Administrators and other users will primarily use the workload Console to use working mode.

Figure 1. Pureapplication System Workload Console

Select Workload Console => Catalog => Virtual Images, where you can view the workload system directory in pureapplication console to check whether the rack has preloaded the ODM image 。 If the ODM image is not found, it is simple to install. You need to obtain the appropriate OVA (Open Virtual application) image file. After the installation is complete, you can use the patterns provided in the image. One of the main advantages of the pattern is that you can use the schema provided as a template to create your own schema, or even create a new schema from scratch.

The following are high-level steps for installing a cloud Image:

In the Pureapplication System console, go to the Welcome tab and select Download Command line tool.

After downloading the tool, extract the executable file into a directory, preferably C:\IBM\Deployer.

Adds the deployment program path to the system PATH environment variable.

On the system that owns the image file, install the executable file using the command line interface (CLI). Figure 2 shows the ODM pattern folder. Note that there are two CLI folders: Deployer.cli and PURE.CLI, and Setup commands for Windows and Unix operating systems. The installer command has a platform type (-t) option that allows you to specify Pureapplication System or IBM workload Deployer (IWD). The default setting for the platform type is Pureapplication System.

For example, if you want to install the ODM image on the IBM workload deployer, the syntax for the command is:

Installer–h <ipas-host>–u <user>–p <password>-T IWD

Note: The ODM image file does not ask you to download the CLI tool. It provides an installer command that installs an image on the pureapplication System rack. If the ODM-supplied tool is obsolete, the installer downloads the latest version of the CLI tool before the actual installation of the image.
