We described how DHCP works in the last issue, and then we explained how to configure the DHCP service on the server, and we selected two of the most common server operating systems Windows2000server and Linux as examples, In addition, we will describe how to configure DHCP on common network devices.

Windows2000server

Windows2000server a great deal of effort in DHCP, not only solve the problems in NT4.0, but also add a lot of new features. For example, integration with DNS, enhanced DHCP monitoring and management, DHCP cluster servers, DHCP directory authorization, and so on.

The following is an instance of configuring the DHCP service in Windows2000

1. Install the DHCP service. Log in with the Administrator account, double-click Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components, start the Windows Components Wizard, select Network Services, click Details, select Dynamic Host Allocation protocol, click OK, You can install the DHCP service on this server.

2. To enable a newly installed DHCP server to assign an IP address to a client, you must first authorize the server in the domain. Log on to the computer with an administrator account, open the DHCP console in the Administrative Tools menu, right-click the server you want to authorize, and in the pop-up menu, click Authorize to complete the authorization for the server.

Small Knowledge: Authorization (authorize), this function is very practical and necessary, because in the old version of the DHCP server, any user can create a DHCP server, the server can also assign IP addresses to users, which can cause address conflicts, This problem is effectively resolved in Windows2000server: Any DHCP server can assign an IP address to a client only after it is authorized in the directory service, or it cannot assign an IP address to a client even if the server receives a lease request.

3. Create and configure scopes. In the control tree, right-click the server to which you want to assign an address, select New scope, and in the following wizard, set the scope of the action domain name, the starting address of the scope, the input subnet mask, the excluded address or address range, and the DHCP lease term information. The name item is just a hint, and you can fill in any content. The IP address range has the option of starting address, ending address, and subnet mask, and we can fill in the 10.0.0.1,10.255.255.254,255.0.0.0 (Figure 1) separately. If necessary, enter the IP address or range of IP addresses to be retained in the options that follow. The lease expiration option sets the expiration date for the IP address assigned by the DHCP server, such as 8 days. Finally, assign DNS, WINS servers, and activate scopes.
