In Word documents, hyperlinks allow us to jump freely within a document, jump to other documents or applications, and even connect directly to the Internet. An existing file or Web page, a location in the current document, a new document, and an e-mail address can be inserted into a document as a hyperlink, as in the following steps (for example, to link an existing file):

1. Place the insertion point where you want to insert the hyperlink, or select an object (text, graphic, and so on) to display as a hyperlink.

2. Perform insert → hyperlink, or click the Insert Hyperlink button on the Standard toolbar to open the Insert Hyperlink dialog box. If the text is selected in the previous step, it is automatically displayed in the Text to display box, which can be changed and the text selected in the document changes. Note whether the existing file or Web page button on the upper left is selected (in a sunken state), or click to select.

3. In the Address box, enter the name of the file to which you want to link the selected object in the document (including the exact path to the file name). Or use the Look in list to find and select files, but you can also use the Browse Web or browse files buttons to choose from the appropriate dialog box.

4. Click the ScreenTip button, open the Set Hyperlink ScreenTip dialog box, enter the relevant text in the ScreenTip text box, and then when you point to the hyperlink with the mouse pointer and become a hand, the prompts will pop up on the screen. If you do not do this, the prompt information displays the path and file name of the linked document or Web page. When you have finished typing, click OK to return to the Insert Hyperlink dialog box.

Note: If the ScreenTip is not displayed, execute tools → options → view, and check the ScreenTip item in display.

5. Click OK to close the dialog box, which, by default, appears as the underlined blue text. When you move the mouse pointer over it, the pointer changes to a hand and prompts you to click the link to jump to the corresponding target.

Note: By default, Tracking (or opening) a hyperlink requires that you press the CTRL key while you click the hyperlink. If you want to implement a click Jump effect similar to a Web page, you can do the following: Execute tools → options → edit, clear the use CTRL + click to track hyperlinks check box.

In addition, you can make hyperlinks by dragging or copying text and then "pasting as hyperlinks" (see "Getting Started with Word animation Tutorial 50: Pasting as hyperlinks").

It's important to note that by default, Word will type text that has a Web site and e-mail address format (followed by spaces, Chinese characters or input back to return when automatically converted to hyperlinks, if you do not need this feature can be turned off in the following ways, execution tools → AutoCorrect options → "AutoFormat As You Type" tab, clear the Replace Internet and network paths with hyperlinks check box under Auto Replace as you type.
