According to foreign media reports, January 1, February 21, Google's Gears project manager Ian Fette announced through a blog on Friday that Google would give up its support for the Gears project.

Gears is a browser plug-in that allows users to access web applications such as Gmail offline. As early as last July, Google said that it would focus on HTML5 development in the future, rather than developing the Mac version of Gears, but did not disclose specific information at that time.

Feat posted an article entitled Hello HTML5 on Friday on the Gears API (application programming interface) blog. He pointed out that Gears did not perform many upgrades in the past few months because his team has moved to using HTML5 to deploy the same features for Chrome browsers. So far, Google has added database API, workers, local storage, Web Socket and other features for Chrome, and will soon add LocalServer API and location functions. With these features, Gears seems unnecessary, at least for Chrome.

Feat said that due to the shift in development focus, the support for Gears will gradually decrease. From now on, Google will no longer provide Gears plug-in support for Apple's Snow Leopard operating system. At the same time, the support for Firefox and IE Gears will gradually decrease, and eventually give up completely. "We will not invest any more resources to actively develop new features," said Fett ."

Insiders believe that Google hopes to find a way to transfer the applications and users of Gears to the HTML5 camp. Although there is no effective method yet, Google seems to be waiting for developers to embrace HTML5 and eventually give up Gears completely.
